Carlo Petrini

Carlo Petrini (born 22 June 1949), born in the province of Cuneo in the commune of Bra in Italy, is the founder of the International Slow Food Movement. He first came to prominence in the 1980s for taking part in a campaign against the fast food chain McDonald's opening near the Spanish Steps in Rome. In 1983, he helped to create and develop the Italian non-profit food and wine association known as Arcigola.

Petrini was formerly a political activist in the communist movement Partito di Unità Proletaria. In 1977, Petrini began contributing culinary articles to communist daily newspapers il manifesto and l'Unità. He is an editor of multiple publications at the publishing house Slow Food Editore. He has written weekly columns for La Stampa and is currently a regular journalist on La Repubblica. In October 2004, he founded the University of Gastronomic Sciences, a school intended to bridge the gap between agriculture and gastronomy. He was chosen as one of Time magazine's heroes of the year. He is now a supporter and member of the Italian Democratic Party (center-left wing). Petrini was proposed for politician roles (as Minister).

Carlo Petrini (scientist)

Carlo Petrini (Turin, Italy, 6 November 1965) is an Italian scientist and senior researcher at the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS), where he is head of the Bioethics Unit.

Biography

Petrini studied at the University of Turin where he graduated in 1988 with a degree in Biological Sciences. The year after he began at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) where he developed an interest in problems tied to ethics in scientific research, in particular in the biomedical ethics.

Petrini is Vice-Chair of the Ethics Committee of the ISS.

He is Corresponding Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life and contributor to L'Osservatore Romano.

In 2007 he became head of the Bioethics Unit at ISS.

Carlo Petrini (29 March 1948 – 16 April 2012) was an Italian professional football player and coach.

Biography

Playing career

He played for 8 seasons (112 games, 19 goals) in the Serie A for A.C. Milan, Torino F.C., A.S. Varese 1910, Ternana Calcio, A.S. Roma, Hellas Verona F.C. and Bologna F.C. 1909.

His career almost ended after he received a 3 years and 6-month ban from football in the Totonero 1980 match-fixing scandal. After 1982 he played for a few more seasons.

After ending his career in football in the mid-eighties, Petrini devoted himself to business, for a time managing his own finance company. After initial success, the business was affected by the accumulation of debts to moneylenders. To escape his creditors, Petrini left Italy and took refuge in France, where he lived for several years in complete anonymity.

Petrini's name came back to the headlines in 1995. His 19-year-old son, Diego, was dying from a brain tumor in the Galliera hospital in Genoa, and he launched an appeal through the media, asking to see his father, which he had not heard from for the past six years. Diego, a promising footballer, died without seeing Petrini, who had decided not to return to Italy. Petrini later wrote a touching book of poetry inspired by this sad story after his final return to Italy in 1998.
