Careful (album)

Careful is the second studio album by new wave band The Motels. It was recorded between March and May 1980, and released in June 1980. The album was produced by John Carter who produced the group's 1979 debut.

"Danger" was released as the disc's lead single and landed in the Top 20 in France. "Days Are O.K." and "Whose Problem?" became Top 50 songs (and their only chart hits) in the United Kingdom. None of the singles released from the album charted in the United States, but the disc reached #45 on the Billboard album chart in the summer of 1980. It eventually sold nearly 400,000 copies in America.

"Danger" was the second Motels single that was accompanied by a music video (following 1979's "Total Control").

"Careful" is Guster's second single released off the Keep it Together album. It is also on the live CD and DVD Guster on Ice.

Brian Rosenworcel does backup vocals during the "na na na nas" on "Careful". This is only the second time he has been credited with vocals.

Careful (film)

Careful (1992) is the third feature film directed by Guy Maddin. It is Maddin's first colour film, shot on 16mm for a budget of $1.1 million. At one point, Martin Scorsese had agreed to act in the film, as Count Knotkers, but bowed out to complete Cape Fear. Maddin pursued casting hockey star Bobby Hull, but ended up casting Paul Cox.

Plot

Careful is set in Tolzbad, a fictional mountain town under constant threat of devastating avalanches that can be triggered by any loud noise or even a too-large expression of emotion. The people of Tolzbad suppress their emotions as much as possible, living in constant vigilance against losing self-control. An opening lecture cautions common advice ("Think twice!", "Don't stand so close to the walnut tree!").

The greatest ambition of the citizens of Tolzbad is to become good servants for the reclusive Count Knotkers. Johann and Grigorss are brothers and butlers-in-training. Both are beloved of their mother Zenaida, although she hates their brother Franz, whom they do not speak of and who has been exiled to the attic. The ghost of their dead blind father appears to Franz to warn him of impending doom in the family, yet Franz (paralyzed and mute and covered in cobwebs) can do nothing. The ghost complains to Franz that Zenaida never loved him and harboured love for Count Knotkers instead, although forbidden to marry him by the Count's mother.

Fiction

Fiction is a term used to classify any story created by the imagination, rather than based strictly on history or fact. Fiction can be expressed in a variety of formats, including writings, live performances, films, television programs, video games, and role-playing games, though the term originally and most commonly refers to the major narrative forms of literature (see literary fiction), including the novel, novella, short story, and play. Fiction constitutes an act of creative invention, so that faithfulness to reality is not typically assumed; in other words, fiction is not expected to present only characters who are actual people or descriptions that are factually true. The context of fiction is generally open to interpretation, due to fiction's freedom from any necessary embedding in reality; however, some fictional works are claimed to be, or marketed as, historically or factually accurate, complicating the traditional distinction between fiction and non-fiction. Fiction is a classification or category, rather than a specific mode or genre, unless used in a narrower sense as a synonym for a particular literary fiction form.

Fiction Records

Fiction Records is a British major label record and music publishing company founded by Chris Parry in 1978 that is best known for being the home of The Cure for over 20 years. Fiction became a standalone label (still owned by Universal, but no longer affiliated to Polydor Ltd) in January 2014. Fiction repertoire is now released internationally through Caroline International (ex-North America).

History

Fiction (The Comsat Angels album)

Fiction, released in 1982 on Polydor Records, was The Comsat Angels' third album. The album was reissued on CD twice, in 1995 by RPM Records and in 2006 by Renascent Records, with different track listings (see below). The album peaked at No. 94 in the UK charts in September 1982.

Fiction was less gloomy than the Comsats' previous album, Sleep No More. Frontman Stephen Fellows said of the change: "I certainly didn't want to make another record as intense as Sleep No More — at least not immediately. Sleep No More was so dark that I felt it skewed things a bit — possibly even mentally for me. I just felt if we carried on in that direction it'd lead to madness or maybe even something worse."

Fellows was satisfied with many of the songs on Fiction, including "What Else!?," "Pictures," and "After the Rain", but felt that the album as a whole could have been better. "We were a bit short of tunes when we recorded it," he said. "We were touring quite a bit after Sleep No More and there wasn't as much time to write as I would have liked."
