Shut the Box

Shut the Box, also called Canoga, Klackers, Zoltan Box, Batten Down the Hatches, Jackpot or High Rollers, is a game of dice for one or more players, commonly played in a group of two to four for stakes. Traditionally, a counting box is used with tiles numbered 1 to 9 where each can be covered with a hinged or sliding mechanism, though the game can be played with only a pair of dice, pen, and paper. Variations exist where the box has up to 10 or 12 tiles.

Rules

At the start of the game all levers or tiles are "open" (cleared, up), showing the numerals 1 to 9.

During the game, each player plays in turn. A player begins his or her turn by throwing or rolling the die or dice into the box. If 1 is the only tile still open, the player may roll only one die. Otherwise, the player must roll both dice.

After throwing, the player adds up the dots (pips) on the dice and then "shuts" (closes, covers) one of any combination of open numbers that equals the total number of dots showing on the dice. For example, if the total number of dots is 8, the player may choose any of the following sets of numbers (as long as all of the numbers in the set are available to be covered):

Canoga (Los Angeles Metro station)

Canoga is a station on the Los Angeles Metro Orange Line located on Canoga Avenue in in Canoga Park, in the western San Fernando Valley. IIt is part of the Los Angeles County Metro Liner system.

Platforms

Canoga station is the only Metro Liner station to have more than 2 platforms, having a total of 4 platforms. A digital message sign was installed in the station which indicates at what time the next Orange Line bus will arrive, its destination, and the platform it will stop at.

Layout

Canoga is the fifth station on the Orange Line, counting from the western terminus at Chatsworth station. Buses began running on the original transitway route to Canoga and former western terminus at Warner Center on December 17, 2006. The completed station opened to the public on December 27, 2006, about 14 months after the other stations eastward on the line opened. Canoga was built to alleviate the lack of parking available at other Orange Line stations in the West Valley, and provides a total of 612 new parking spaces.
