Campsite

A campsite or camping pitch is a place used for overnight stay in the outdoors. In UK English a campsite is an area, usually divided into a number of pitches, where people can camp overnight using tents or camper vans or caravans; this UK English use of the word is synonymous with the US English expression campground. In American English the term campsite generally means an area where an individual, family, group, or military unit can pitch a tent or park a camper; a campground may contain many campsites.

There are two types of campsites:

Campgrounds

The term camp comes from the Latin word campus, meaning "field". Therefore, a campgrounds consists typically of open pieces of ground where a camper can pitch a tent or park a camper. More specifically a campsite is a dedicated area set aside for camping and for which often a user fee is charged. Campsites typically feature a few (but sometimes no) improvements.

Scout Activity Centre (The Scout Association)

A Scout Activity Centre is a campsite, hostel or conference centre of The Scout Association. They offer outdoor facilities and activities for the whole of the Scout Association and, in some cases, for other organisations. The campsites typically have capacity for hundreds of Scouts simultaneously, including buildings, camping pitches, fireplaces, etc.

The Scout Association has always owned numerous campsites and other buildings. They were mostly run by local groups or departments. In 2004, the Scout Association reduced their number of nationally administered Scout Activity Centres from some twenty to four, by divesting sites to the entities that are locally involved. There are now nine National Scout Activity Centres:

Two sites, Great Tower in the Lake District and Woodhouse Park near the mouth of the River Severn became national centres on 1 April 2011.

Baden-Powell House

Baden-Powell House is a Scouting hostel and conference centre in South Kensington, London, which was built as a tribute to Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting. From 1974 to 2001, Baden-Powell House was the headquarters of The Scout Association.

Scouting Ireland

Scouting Ireland (Irish: Gasóga na hÉireann) is the sole World Organization of the Scout Movement-recognised Scouting association in the Republic of Ireland; in Northern Ireland it operates alongside The Scout Association of the UK. Scouting Ireland is a voluntary, non-formal educational movement for young people. It is independent, non-political, open to all without distinction of origin, race, creed, sexual orientation, spiritual belief or gender, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by Lord Baden-Powell and as stated by WOSM.

The aim of Scouting Ireland is to encourage the Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character Emotional, and Spiritual development (known as the SPICES) of young people "so that they may achieve their full potential and as responsible citizens, to improve society". Of the 750,000 people between the ages of 6 and 18 in Ireland, approximately 6% are involved in Scouting Ireland. The organisation was founded on 21 June 2003, after a merger between Scouting Ireland C.S.I. and Scouting Ireland S.A.I.. Its headquarters are at Larch Hill, County Dublin.
