Camden Joy

Camden Joy is the pseudonym of American writer and musician Tom Adelman. Joy is the author of six books—including The Last Rock Star Book or Liz Phair: A Rant and Lost Joy, a collection of stories, pamphlets, and posters.

In 1991, Adelman accompanied The David Lowery Band as they toured the country, first by Greyhound and later in the van as the band’s roadie. Adelman then spent several years researching David Lowery’s previous band, Camper Van Beethoven, interviewing band members, roadies, fans, producers, managers, videographers. Dissatisfied with the result, he started it over under the name Camden Joy. The result was a novel that included accounts of both The David Lowery Band’s road trip and Camper Van Beethoven’s break-up. Much later, in 2000, Harper Collins published the novel as Boy Island under its Quill imprint.

In 1994, Camden Joy wrote two tracts (“Lost Pamphlets”) entitled The Greatest Record Album Ever Told and The Greatest Record Album Singer That Ever Was.

Joy moved from Los Angeles to New York in 1995, and attained a brief notoriety for his New York City postering projects and street manifestos.The Lost Manifestoes of Camden Joy were wheat-pasted around Manhattan and Brooklyn throughout the last months of 1995. This Poster Will Not Never Change Your Life { was a multi-poster project in 1996, as was the collaborative Dear CMJ... Joy’s final act of street postering occurred in the summer of 1997 when he unveiled the collaborative Fifty Posters About Souled American.

Joyà

Joyà is a 70 minute long, resident show at the Vidanta resort in the Riviera Maya, Mexico produced as a collaboration between 45 degrees and it's parent company Cirque du Soleil. It is Cirque's first resident show in Latin America. Joya premiered on November 8, 2014 inside the custom-built Joyà theatre, which seats 600 guests at capacity. The exterior design of the theatre was inspired by organic forms in a clearing surrounded by trees. The story, set in a naturalist's library which transforms into other exotic locations, follows the journey of a "rebellious young girl [who] is sent by her mischievous grandfather on a fantastical quest spanning generations".

Unlike other Cirque du Soleil productions, Joya is an "intimate theatrical and culinary experience" in that patrons have the option to enjoy the show along with a specially designed degustation menu at private tables around the stage, or simply have a glass of champagne with canapés on top of the show ticket. The show also incorporates smell into the acts, providing an all-around "feast for the senses".

English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding has released three studio albums, one remix album, seven extended plays, 23 singles (including six as a featured artist), five promotional singles and 28 music videos. As of June 2013, Goulding had sold three million albums and 10 million singles worldwide. Additionally, she had sold over 1.5 million albums and over 4.3 million singles (including collaborations) in the United Kingdom alone as of February 2014.

After signing to Polydor Records in July 2009, Goulding released her debut extended play, An Introduction to Ellie Goulding, in December of that year. It was followed by the release of her debut studio album, Lights, in February 2010. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and subsequently earned a double platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It spawned four singles: "Under the Sheets", "Starry Eyed", "Guns and Horses" and "The Writer", which reached numbers 53, four, 26 and 19 on the UK Singles Chart, respectively. In November 2010, the album was re-released as Bright Lights; it featured seven new songs, including a cover version of Elton John's "Your Song", which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The sixth single to be lifted from the album, "Lights", peaked at number 49 in the United Kingdom, while becoming Goulding's highest-charting single to date in the United States and Canada, where it reached numbers two and seven, respectively.

Camden (Port Royal, Virginia)

Camden is an Italian Villa-style house on the Rappahannock River just downriver of Port Royal, Virginia. Built 1857-1859, it is one of the nation's finest examples of an Italianate country house. It is located on the southeast bank of the Rappahannock River, about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) north of the intersection of Camden Road (Virginia State Route 686) and United States Route 17. Camden was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971 for its architecture.

Description and history

Camden is a two-story frame house in a pure Italianate style, clad with flush siding that was originally treated to resemble stone. The tower base projects from the front, with a semicircular porch surrounding its base, looking out over the Rappahannock River. The first floor includes a central hall, library, dining room, parlor and a main-level bedroom. The parlor retains its original Victorian rococo furnishings.

Camden was built on the site of an earlier house belonging to the Pratt family that dated to 1760. William Carter Pratt demolished this house around 1856 to use the prominent site for a new house. He engaged Baltimore architect Norris G. Starkwether, with construction stating in 1857, completed in 1859. Up-to-date in style and technology, the house was equipped with central heating and cooling, gas lights and running water. A private gas works was installed to generate gas for the lights. The house's tower was destroyed during the American Civil War, by a hit from a Union gunboat in late November 1862, and never restored.

Camden, South Carolina

Camden is a city in, and the county seat of, Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,838 in the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, Camden has a total area of 10.68 square miles (27.7 km²), of which 10.07 square miles (26.1 km²) is land and 0.61 square miles (1.6 km²) (5.71%) is water.

History

Camden is the oldest inland city and fourth oldest city in South Carolina. It is near the center of the Cofitachequi chiefdom that existed in the 1500s. In 1730, Camden became part of a township plan ordered by King George II. Kershaw County’s official web site states, “Originally laid out in 1732 as the town of Fredericksburg in the Wateree River swamp (south of the present town) when King George II ordered eleven inland townships established along South Carolina's rivers, few of the area settlers chose to take lots surveyed in the town, choosing the higher ground to the north. The township soon disappeared.” In 1758, Joseph Kershaw, from Yorkshire, England came into the township, established a store and renamed the town Pine Tree Hill. Camden became the main inland trade center in the colony. Kershaw suggested that the town be renamed Camden, in honor of Lord Camden, the champion of colonial rights.

Camden, Maine

Camden is a town in Knox County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,850 at the 2010 census. The population of the town more than triples during the summer months, due to tourists and summer residents. Camden is a famous summer colony in the Mid-Coast region of Maine. Similar to Bar Harbor, Nantucket and North Haven, Camden is well known for its summer community of wealthy Northeasterners, mostly from Boston, New York and Philadelphia.

History

Penobscot Abenaki Indians called the area Megunticook, meaning "great swells of the sea", a reference to the silhouette of the Camden Hills (more visibly seen on a bright night). Part of the Waldo Patent, it remained wilderness until after the French and Indian War. It was first settled about 1771–1772 by James Richards, who built a home at the mouth of the Megunticook River. Others soon followed, some making modest attempts to farm the broken and often mountainous terrain. The first home in the area was the Conway House, a Cape Cod style home built in 1770. In 1962, it was purchased and renovated into a history museum.
