Cambria

Cambria is a name for Wales, being the Latinised form of the Welsh name Cymru (Wales).

Etymology

The names of Cymru "Wales" and "Cumbria", were once connected by 17th-century celticists to the Biblical Gomer, or to the Cimbri or the Cimmerians of Antiquity, yet these connections are unlikely. It is now known to come from Old Welsh combrog "compatriot; Welshman", from the root *brogi "country, territory" (cf. Welsh, Cornish, Breton bro "territory, country"), itself from *mrogi (cf. Old Irish mruig, gen. mroga "country").Combrog derives from a Proto-Brythonic word *kom-brogos, meaning "fellow countryman, compatriot". The word is therefore cognate with Breton keñvroad, keñvroiz, "comrade, compatriot". The Latinized name Cambria has the same etymology.

According to Geoffrey of Monmouth in the first part of his pseudohistory Historia Regum Britanniae, the Trojan Brutus had three sons among whom (having subdued Gogmagog) he divided his lands after landing in Britain. His elder son, Locrinus, received the land between the rivers Humber and Severn, which he called Loegria (a Latinization of the Welsh name Lloegr, "England"). His second son, Albanactus, got the lands beyond the Humber, which took from him the name of Albany (Yr Alban in Welsh: Scotland). The younger son, Camber, was bequeathed everything beyond the Severn, which was called after him "Cambria".

The first orchid hybrid among Odontoglossum crispum x Miltonia x Cochlioda noetzliana was obtained in 1911 by Mr. Charles Vuylsteke and was called Vuylstekeara in his honor. About ten years later by crossbreeding Vuylstekeara and Odontoglossum Clonius appeared Vuylstekeara Cambria Plush, awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society and by the American Orchid Society. From that moment many spectacular hybrids have been created and the Cambria term is nowadays used for a large group of hybrid orchids with beautiful spotted and brightly coloured flowers.

Description

The Cambria orchids are equipped with quite stretched pseudobulbs, from which the leaves and the long floral stem develop. The inflorescences have from three to seven flowers. At the end of the flowering period the orchid produces a new pseudobulb that can create a new plant.

Cambria (company)

Cambria is a producer of engineered quartz surfaces in the United States. It is located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, with additional facilities in Le Sueur, Minnesota; Charlotte, North Carolina; Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada. Cambria is privately held and owned by the Davis family.

Kitchen countertops

Cambria produces quartz surfaces, primarily for use as kitchen countertops. It is used in a similar manner as granite, except that it is not porous, and thus requires no periodic sealing. The look of any quartz countertop compares to granite in that the colors are deep and consistent.

The process of creating the countertops is different than granite, in that it is an engineered product, consisting of a minimum of 93% quartz and 7% epoxy binder and dyes. An engineered product that requires no sealer has the advantage in that it requires no harsh chemicals to seal, nor does it emit harmful chemicals into the air, making it potentially more environmentally friendly.
