Cade (novel)

Cade is a 1966 thriller novel written by James Hadley Chase.

Synopsis

Cade was lucky. He was famous, wealthy, sought after, and his creative talent for photography set him in a class of his own. Success hadn't spoiled him. He remained generous and unselfish, a simple man with a brilliant talent, and a champion of the unfortunate and the persecuted.

But like most creative artists he had his failings: he was extravagant, he drank more than was good for him, and was over-fond of the company of beautiful women. For a long time he escaped the logic of these failings, until Juana Roco, the young Mexican girl, swept into his life. Cade thought she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

Within a few months, Cade's luck had changed. Few people would have recognised the alcoholic wreck of a man left for dead on the streets of a town called Eastonville.

Novel

A novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story.

The genre has also been described as possessing "a continuous and comprehensive history of about two thousand years". This view sees the novel's origins in Classical Greece and Rome, medieval, early modern romance, and the tradition of the novella. The latter, an Italian word used to describe short stories, supplied the present generic English term in the 18th century. Ian Watt, however, in The Rise of the Novel (1957) suggests that the novel first came into being in the early 18th century,

The romance is a closely related long prose narrative. Walter Scott defined it as "a fictitious narrative in prose or verse; the interest of which turns upon marvellous and uncommon incidents", whereas in the novel "the events are accommodated to the ordinary train of human events and the modern state of society". However, many romances, including the historical romances of Scott,Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, are also frequently called novels, and Scott describes romance as a "kindred term". Romance, as defined here, should not be confused with the genre fiction love romance or romance novel. Other European languages do not distinguish between romance and novel: "a novel is le roman, der Roman, il romanzo."

Moon of Israel (novel)

Moon of Israel is a novel by Rider Haggard, first published in 1918 by John Murray. The novel narrates the events of the Biblical Exodus from Egypt told from the perspective of a scribe named Ana.

Haggard dedicated his novel to Sir Gaston Maspero, a distinguished Egyptologist and director of Cairo Museum.

Adaptation

His novel was the basis of a script by Ladislaus Vajda, for film-director Michael Curtiz in his 1924 Austrian epic known as Die Sklavenkönigin, or "Queen of the Slaves".

Cade (horse)

Cade (1734–1756) was an important foundation sire of Thoroughbred racehorses. He was the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1752, 1753, 1758, 1759 and 1760.

Breeding

Bred by Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin, he was by the Thoroughbred foundation sire, the Godolphin Arabian. Out of Roxana (1718) (by Bald Galloway), he was a full-brother to the first son of the Goldophin Arabian, Lath (1732 bay colt). Orphaned by Roxana when he was 10 days old, he was raised on cows' milk.

Racing career

In 1740, he defeated Sedbury (1734 chestnut colt by Partner), Elephant and Blacksilver to win the King's Plate. The following year, in April, he finished second to Sedbury in the King's Plate, defeating Countess and Elephant. He then ran second in a £50 race in July 1744 to Molorro (bl. c. 1736). Cade was then sold to Thomas Meredith of Easby in 1745, for whom he ran third in a 50 guineas purse to Bucephalus (ch.g. 1738) and Starling.

Cade was more successful as a stallion than a racehorse, becoming Leading Sire in England in 1752, 1753, 1758, 1759 and 1760. His top offspring included:

Giancarlo Cadè (February 27, 1930 – October 7, 2013) was an Italian professional football player and coach.

Born in Zanica, he played for 6 seasons (64 games, no goals) in the Serie A for Atalanta B.C..

He played his only game for the Italy national football team on July 16, 1952 in a 1952 Summer Olympics game against the United States.

His younger brother Giuseppe Cadè played football professionally as well. To distinguish them, Giancarlo was referred to as Cadè I and Giuseppe as Cadè II.

Among the more notable stages of his career as a manager were his times with A.C. Reggiana 1919 (his first managerial experience, promotion to Serie B), A.C. Mantova (promotion to Serie A, 9th and 16th place in the Serie A and relegation back to Serie B), second stint with Hellas Verona F.C. (10th in Serie A), A.C. Torino (7th and 8th in Serie A), A.S. Varese 1910 (relegation from Serie A), third stint with Hellas Verona F.C. (10th and 13th in Serie A), Delfino Pescara 1936 (promotion to Serie A), Bologna F.C. 1909 (promotion to Serie B) and A.C. Ancona (promotion to Serie B).
