CTV Two

CTV Two (also known as "CTV 2") is a Canadian English language television system that is owned by the Bell Media subsidiary of Bell Canada. The system consists of four over-the-air owned-and-operated television stations (O&Os) in Ontario and one in British Columbia, and two regional cable-only channels, one in Atlantic Canada and the other being the provincial cable-only educational channel in Alberta.

CTV Two provides complementary programming to Bell Media's larger CTV network – primarily newer or younger-skewing series which have smaller audiences than those on the mainline CTV network.

History

Beginning as NewNet

The system began to develop in September 1995, at CKVR in Barrie, Ontario. In 1995, owner CHUM Limited dropped CKVR's longtime affiliation with CBC Television and relaunched it as an independent station with a more youthful image in order to generate interest from viewers in the neighbouring Toronto market, where CKVR had long been available on basic cable. This included adopting a news format similar to the CityPulse newscasts on sister station CITY-TV, replacing its various classic television shows with more contemporary series, and picking up a package of games for the Toronto Raptors, Toronto's then-new NBA franchise. The resulting station became known as "The New VR".

Television

CTV (pay television)

CTV was an analogue pay television package, available in Scandinavia. It was mostly using Norwegian satellites such as Thor 1 and Intelsat 707 to broadcast basic channels to Scandinavian homes, using the D2-MAC transmission system. CTV was operated by Telenor, who in 1997 joined forces with Multichoice (owned by Canal+) to launch the Canal Digital platform. Most of the CTV channels were closed down in September 2001.

CTV Television Network

CTV is a Canadian English language broadcast television network that is owned by the Bell Media division of BCE, Inc. It is Canada's largest privately owned network, and has consistently been placed as Canada's top-rated network in total viewers and in key demographics since 2002, after several years trailing the rival Global Television Network in key markets.

Bell Media also operates additional CTV-branded properties, including the 24-hour national cable news network CTV News Channel and the secondary CTV Two television system.

There has never been an official full name corresponding to the initials "CTV"; however, it is generally assumed to mean "Canadian Television", a phrase used in a promotional campaign by the network in 1998, and also in pre-promotion for the network prior to its launch in 1961.

Formation

In 1958, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's government passed a new Broadcasting Act, establishing the Board of Broadcast Governors (forerunner to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, or CRTC) as the governing body of Canadian broadcasting, effectively ending the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) dual role as regulator and broadcaster. The new board's first act was to take applications for "second" television stations in Halifax, Montreal (in both English and French), Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver in response to an outcry for an alternative to the CBC's television service. Calgary and Edmonton were served by privately owned CBC affiliates; the other six markets by CBC owned-and-operated stations (O&Os).
