Canal Maximo Televisión

Canal Maximo Televisión (CMT) was a Venezuelan regional television station that was seen on UHF channel 51 in the metropolitan area of Caracas, Barquisimeto, and the Miranda State, channel 43 in Calabozo, Puerto Ordaz, and the Zulia State, and channel 21 in San Cristóbal.

History

In 1993, Dr. Umberto Petricca Zugaro founded Canal Metropolitano Televisión (CMT) and received government authorization to begin its testing phase. It was one of the first television stations to broadcast on an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) channel in Venezuela. Their studios were located in the Caracas neighborhood of Los Cortijos de Lourdes.

In their first year, CMT was only on the air five hours a day (6:00 pm to 11:00 pm) and reached 75% of the city of Caracas from a transmitter located in the neighborhood of Colinas de los Caobos.

In 1995, CMT began broadcasting 18 hours a day and moved to their studios in Boleíta Norte.

In 1999, Canal Metropolitano Televisión changed its name to Canal Maximo Televisión, but kept the CMT branding.

CMT (Canadian TV channel)

CMT is a Canadian English language Category A cable and satellite specialty channel that is owned as a joint venture between Corus Entertainment (which owns a controlling 90% interest) and Viacom (which owns the remaining 10%), owners of the flagship CMT cable channel in the United States. The channel airs country music and family-oriented general entertainment programs in the form of music videos, award shows, concerts and sitcoms.

It is one of two Viacom-branded channels that are owned by Corus, the other being Nickelodeon.

History

Prior to the launch of CMT Canada, the American-based country television network, Country Music Television, had been available in Canada since 1984, one year after the channel's launch in the United States.

In June 1994, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) licensed a series of new Canadian specialty television channels; among the ones whose licence was granted was The Country Network, whose programming provisions required it to primarily feature country music videos (a minimum of 90%). The licence was granted to a partnership between Maclean-Hunter (which owned 60% majority control) and Rawlco Communications (which owned the remaining 40%).
