Chèo

Chèo is a form of generally satirical musical theatre, often encompassing dance, traditionally performed by Vietnamese peasants in northern Vietnam. It is usually performed outdoors by semi-amateur touring groups, stereotypically in a village square or the courtyard of a public building, although it is today increasingly also performed indoors and by professional performers.

Hát chèo's origins date to the 12th century during the Lý Dynasty and has existed in its present form since roughly the 16th century. It derives from folk traditions, and was orally transmitted; unlike courtly theater traditions, it employs no scenery and sparse costumes and makeup. It involves a combination of traditional set pieces and improvisational routines appropriate to amateur theatre. Like the Commedia dell'arte, it often carries of a message of satirical criticism of the existing social order. The traditional musical ensemble consisted of fiddle, flute, and drum, though in modern recreations more instruments are used.

Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario

The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) (French: Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l'est de l'Ontario) is a major children's hospital and university teaching hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, serving Eastern Ontario and western Quebec. CHEO is also a trauma centre for children in Eastern Ontario and one of five in Canada (others being Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary, BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver and IWK Health Centre in Halifax). It is affiliated with The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa, and is funded by the provincial Government of Ontario. The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario first opened its doors on May 17, 1974, and is located at 401 Smyth Road.

Funding

CHEO is funded by the provincial government of Ontario as well as by a variety of public donations. One of the hospital's major sources of funding comes from the CHEO Foundation.

CHEO Foundation

The Foundation was first formed in the 1960s when the community began raise over $4 million for the creation of a children's hospital. Later it officially became the CHEO Foundation, whose purpose is solely to raise funds to help support the work of the hospital. Donations help the hospital provide a wide variety of pediatric programs, research, state of the art equipment, medical and nursing education, and assistance to families in crisis.
