The Hour (magazine series)

The Hour was a lifestyle magazine programme broadcast on STV, the ITV franchise in Northern and Central Scotland.

Originally broadcast each weekday afternoon at 5pm, the programme was presented for much of its run by Michelle McManus and Stephen Jardine and broadcast from STV's Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow. The programme later moved to a weekly peak time slot but was axed after four weeks.

History

The Hour began in May 2009 as an hour-long replacement for The Five Thirty Show, which had aired on weekdays since January 2008. Whilst its male presenter, Stephen Jardine, remained with the programme since its launch, his female co-host rotated between various personalities until October 2009, when it was announced that regular guest host Michelle McManus would become a main co-host.

Despite replacing The Five Thirty Show, The Hour's focus was more lifestyle-orientated than its predecessor, which was originally intended to cover the main issues and news topics of the day. Features on The Hour included entertainment, TV, movies, cookery, health, gardening, fashion, celebrity guests and other topics.

The Hour (BBC TV series)

The Hour is a 2011 BBC drama series centred on a new current-affairs show being launched by the BBC in June 1956, at the time of the Hungarian Revolution and Suez Crisis. It stars Ben Whishaw, Dominic West, and Romola Garai, with a supporting cast including Tim Pigott-Smith, Juliet Stevenson, Burn Gorman, Anton Lesser, Anna Chancellor, Julian Rhind-Tutt, and Oona Chaplin. It was written by Abi Morgan (also one of the executive producers, alongside Jane Featherstone and Derek Wax).

The series premiered on BBC Two and BBC HD from 19 July 2011 each Tuesday at 9 pm. Each episode lasts 60 minutes, with Ruth Kenley-Letts as producer and Coky Giedroyc as lead director. It was commissioned by Janice Hadlow, Controller, BBC Two, and Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning and produced by Kudos Film and Television.

Following the airing of the final episode of the first series, it was announced that a second series had been commissioned, which is co-produced by American network BBC America. It premiered on 14 November 2012 in the UK and on 28 November 2012 in the United States.

The Hour (newspaper)

The Hour is a daily newspaper published in Norwalk, Connecticut by The Hour Publishing Company. It serves the municipalities of Norwalk, Wilton, Westport, Weston and Stamford.

History

The newspaper was founded in 1871. It was published under the title The Evening Hour from 1895 into the 1900s, at which point it was renamed The Norwalk Hour. Some time after 1971, it became simply The Hour. The newspaper covers local news, business, sports, and entertainment, and as of April 2003, had a circulation of 16,070. In 2000, The Hour shifted from afternoon to morning deliveries.The Hour and its sister weekly newspaper, The Wilton Villager, and the Stamford Times offer three websites with updated news and information 24/7 and is achieving 1.5 million page views per month.

In 2003, competition between The Hour and its much larger Tribune Company–owned rival, The Advocate, came to a head. On May 15, The Stamford-base competitor began circulating a special Norwalk edition with significantly increased local coverage and a price that substantially undercut The Hour. The rivalry escalated to barbs traded on editorial pages.

Stoney, also called Nakoda or Alberta Assiniboine, is a Dakotan Siouan language of the Northern Plains, spoken by about three thousand people in Alberta. It is closely related to and shares distinctive features with Assiniboine, though it is hardly more intelligible with it than it is with Dakota Sioux.

Stoney (drink)

Stoney Ginger Beer, or Stoney Tangawizi (Tangawisi) as it is called in Swahili speaking Africa, is a ginger beer sold in several countries on the African continent. The product, sold in a brown bottle or can, is made and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company.

As is common with ginger beers in comparison to the lighter ginger ales, the ginger flavor present in Stoney is especially intense. There are several varieties of Stoney in different parts of Africa. Although they are all bottled by Coca-Cola their recipes vary. The versions in Southern Africa tend to be more carbonated and sweeter while the East Africa version tends to have a much stronger ginger bite. Stoney Ginger Beer was introduced in South Africa in 1971.

Hour

The hour (common symbol: h or hr, h being the international form of the symbol) is a unit of measurement of time. In modern usage, an hour comprises 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. It is approximately ¹⁄₂₄ of a mean solar day.

An hour in the Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) time standard can include a negative or positive leap second, and may therefore have a duration of 3,599 or 3,601 seconds for adjustment purposes.

Although it is not a standard defined by the International System of Units, the hour is a unit accepted for use with SI, represented by the symbol h.

Etymology

The Middle English word ure first appears in the 13th century, as a loanword from Old French ure, ore, from Latin hōra.Hora, in turn, derives from Greek ὥρα ("season, time of day, hour"). In terms of the Proto-Indo-European language, ὥρα is a cognate of English year and is derived from the Proto-Indo-European word *i̯ēro- ("year, summer").

The ure of Middle English and the Anglo-French houre gradually supplanted the Old English nouns tīd (which survives in Modern English as tide) and stund. Stund is the progenitor of stound, which remains an archaic synonym for hour. Stund is related to the Old High German stunta (whence German Stunde, "hour, lesson"), from Germanic *stundō ("time, interval, while").
