Byåsen IL

Byåsen Idrettslag is a multi-sport club from Trondheim, Norway. It has sections for association football (one for elite, one for women's and one for grassroots football), athletics, handball (one for elite and one for grassroots handball), orienteering, Nordic skiing and cycling.

General history

The club was founded on 30 October 1921, and the three clubs Byåsen IL, Byåsen FK and Byåsen AIL later merged. The club colors are red and white.

Handball

The club has two sections for handball, the elite section named Byåsen Håndball Elite and a grassroots section.

The women's handball team quickly became the flagship of Byåsen, when they in 1980 managed to qualify for the Norwegian Cup Final, as a Third Division team. The team has played in the .highest league since 1984, and has won the top league five times (1986–87, 1987–88, 1989–90, 1995–96, 1997–98) and appeared in the cup final 14 times, winning four (1988, 1989, 1991 and 2007). Its main rival nationally is Larvik HK. Local rivals have included Sjetne IL and Selbu IL.

Byåsen

Byåsen is a district in the city of Trondheim, Norway, situated to the west of the city centre. This is mainly a residential area, with 32,136 residents as of January 1, 2003. The name Byåsen can be translated into "City Hill", which describes its elevated position, overlooking the rest of Trondheim. The view of Trondheim can be seen from Utsikten, translating to "the view", around which the wealthier residents of Byåsen live. House prises in the area are considerably higher than other parts of the city. Byåsen is the only larger district in Trondheim that have solid rock underground.

At the end of the last ice age, between 10,000 and 11,500 years ago, the sea level was about 175 meters higher than it is today. The old sea level is still visible in the landscape forming a line along the hill which can be seen from the city. This line is called Strandlinja (The Strand Line) and is most easily spotted from Kristiansten Fortress which is located to the east of the city centre. A path following Strandlinja is today popular with visitors to Bymarka (The City Forest) which covers the most elevated parts of Byåsen.
