Burned (image)

An image is said to be burned when its original gamut considerably exceeds the target gamut, or when the result of processing considerably exceeds the image's gamut, resulting in clipping. Colloquially, an image is burned when it contains uniform blobs of color, black, or white where there should actually be detail.

All media for storing or capturing images, both analog and digital, are capable of storing only a limited number of color hues, and are bound to a certain gamut. Squeezing an image with a given gamut into a medium with a smaller gamut is done either by adapting the whole range of colors to the new gamut, or by trimming the colors out of gamut. Trimming colors at the extremes results in burning the image. While converting and capturing images is usually a "smart" process which tries to accommodate the entire gamut of the original into the target color space, extreme processing of an image usually results in burning, as defined above.

The most obvious case of burning is when an image's contrast is raised too much, and the result contains obvious black or white blobs, where there used to be detail in the shadows or the highlights. In this case, the brightness can be adjusted in parallel, and in this way the artist decides whether to preserve detail in the shadows (increase brightness) or in the highlights (decrease brightness), at the expense of detail in the opposite.

Plot summary

A real estate mogul named Scott Crane (Jason Bateman) is watching a newscast about the Penchenko family that was killed in a blaze, including their two children Dimitri and Sonia. He gets a call from Rick, the arsonist that he hired. Rick demands extra money since Scott did not tell him there was a family in the house. Scott stands to make a fortune from the land the house was on and refuses to pay. Rick says he knows where he can find Scott, because he knows that he is agoraphobic and never leaves his house. Scott insists he can leave his house any time that he wants, but Rick is unimpressed.

That night, Scott goes to bed but hears a noise outside. He puts a gun underneath his pillow and turns off the lights. The temperature starts to go up and Scott finally notices but is unable to get the thermostat to work. He hears noises downstairs and takes his gun to investigate. The TV is on but no one is there. Scott turns the TV off but it switches back on to a broadcast about the two dead Penchenko children. Scott calls out for Rick but there is no response. He hears a whistling noise and goes out to the kitchen where someone has put a teakettle on the stove. He turns off the stove and burns his hand on the teakettle. When he turns on the water at the faucet, it is boiling hot. A police officer named Kate Graham (Angela Featherstone) of the Arson Investigation Unit informs Scott that they have determined a faulty boiler caused the fire.

Burned (Hopkins novel)

Burned is a young adult novel written by American author Ellen Hopkins and published in April 2006. Like all of Ellen Hopkin's works, the novel is unusual for its free verse format.

Plot

Pattyn is seventeen years old and is the oldest of seven girls in a Mormon household. Her father is an alcoholic who beats her mother, believing a wife must succumb to her husband's actions. Her mother believes her duty is to have as many children as possible, especially a boy to carry on the family name, just as her husband wishes. Pattyn's mother, however, only conceived seven girls, named after famous generals: (youngest to oldest) Georgia (George Patton), Roberta (Robert E. Lee), Davie (Jefferson Davis), Teddie (Theodore Roosevelt), Ulyssa (Ulysses S. Grant), Jackie (Jack Pershing), and Pattyn (George Patton). It is alluded to that Pattyn deeply disagrees with the strict Mormon lifestyle she's lived throughout her childhood, as well as the expectations that will be imposed on her as a woman by her Mormon community, and wishes to break free and gain the freedom to become her own person with her own take on life. She appears to also resent her alcoholic father, Stephan Von Stratten, and her oppressed and submissive mother, and also having to care for her six younger sisters during their father's moments of alcohol-induced rage.

Plot summary

Cordelia Chase has a vision of a child being attacked by a squidlike demon. Meanwhile, Gunn is trying to rescue a young artist; the artist's studio is being attacked by vampires. Cordelia goes to investigate the mansion from her vision. She soon finds herself surrounded by baby products, portraits, and chased by a tentacled monster.

When Angel arrives on the scene, he is surprised to discover that he recognizes some of the portraits. He holds distant memories of him and Darla spending a night with storytellers and artists. Angel reveals that he and Darla were present at the party where Mary Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein; indeed, they witnessed the event that gave Mary the initial idea.

An old evil is trying to use a painting to preserve the life of its body, which, in the terms of the story, inspired the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. In their efforts to save a child the villain is focused on, Team Angel will learn not to judge everything by its image.

Image is an American quarterly literary journal that publishes art and writing engaging or grappling with Judeo-Christian faith. The journal's byline is Art, Faith, Mystery. Image features fiction, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, film, music, and dance. The journal also sponsors the Glen Workshops, the Arts & Faith discussion forum, the Milton Fellowship for writers working on their first book, the summer Luci Shaw Fellowship for undergrads, and the Denise Levertov Award.

History

Image was established in 1989 by Gregory Wolfe and is non-profit quarterly based at Seattle Pacific University.Image was involved with the founding of Seattle Pacific University’s Master of Fine Arts degree, which launched in 2005. The SPU MFA is the world’s first university-based low-residency MFA program to integrate writing and Christian conviction, guided by teachers such as Scott Cairns, Robert Clark, Paula Huston, Gina Ochsner, Jeanne Murray Walker, and Lauren Winner.
