Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation

The Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) was an urban transit holding company, based in Brooklyn, New York City, United States, and incorporated in 1923. The system was sold to the city in 1940. Today, together with the IND subway system, it forms the B Division of the modern New York City Subway. The original BMT routes currently form the J/Z, L, M, N, Q, and R trains, as well as the Franklin Avenue Shuttle, with the ex-IND B, D, and F using BMT trackage in Brooklyn, as does a short section of the A in Queens. The M train enters the IND via the Chrystie Street Connection after crossing the Williamsburg Bridge, and the R train enters the IND via the 60th Street Tunnel Connection. The Z train supplements the J in the peak direction during rush hours only.

History

Company years

The Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation took over the assets of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company in 1923 following the previous company's bankruptcy. Like its predecessor it controlled subsidiaries which operated the great majority of the rapid transit and streetcar lines in Brooklyn with extensions into Queens and Manhattan. One of these, New York Rapid Transit Corporation operated the elevated and subway lines.

Brooklyn is a given name that has increased in popularity for girls in the United States and Canada in recent years. It has occasionally been used as a name in honor of Brooklyn, the New York City borough, but is usually regarded as simply a combination of the names Brook or Brooke, a name derived from an English surname meaning "one who lives near a brook" and the suffix -lyn, which is an element in other popular contemporary names in the United States such as Kaitlyn.

The name was the 26th most popular name for baby girls in the United States in 2014 and was the 16th most popular name for baby girls born in British Columbia, Canada in 2006. Spelling variants include, but are not limited to, Brook Lynn, Brooke Lynn, Brookelynn, Brookelynne, Brooklynn and Brooklynne.

The son of football player David Beckham and his wife Victoria, AKA "Posh Spice", was also given the name Brooklyn.

U District station

U District Station (formerly known by the temporary working name Brooklyn Station) will be an underground light rail station on the Northgate Link Extension of Sound Transit in the University District neighborhood in Seattle. It is scheduled to open along with the rest of the North Link project in 2021. Sound Transit estimates that there will be 12,000 daily boardings at the station in 2030.

Location

The U District Station will be deep underground underneath Brooklyn Ave NE between NE 45th and NE 43rd Streets. It will have two entrances, one in the plaza at the base of the UW Tower at the southwest corner of 45th and Brooklyn, and the other at the northeast corner of 43rd and Brooklyn. It is one block west of The Ave, at the heart of the University District.

Brooklyn (Jacksonville)

Brooklyn is a neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, considered part of Downtown. Originally a residential suburb, commercial uses became prominent during the 20th century, particularly along the St. Johns River and Riverside Avenue, and the area became included in Jacksonville's central business district. In the 21st century, it has become the site of mixed-use developments.

Location

Brooklyn is located along the St. Johns River, south of Lavilla and the Downtown Core, and immediately north of Riverside. It is roughly bounded by McCoy's Creek and the CSX Railroad lines to the north, the river to the east, and Interstate 95 to the south and west. Brooklyn has come to be considered part of Jacksonville's greater downtown.

History

The area was first settled in 1801, when Phillip Dell started a large 800-acre plantation there known as Dell's Bluff. Dell's Bluff changed hands several times before the American Civil War. After the war it was acquired by Miles Price, who sold the southern half of the property to be developed as the suburb of Riverside. The northern section he retained and developed himself as Brooklyn.

Manhattan (/mænˈhætən/, /mənˈhætən/) is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the state of New York in the United States. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the state's original counties. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers, and also includes several small adjacent islands and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood on the mainland.

Manhattan is often said to be the economic and cultural center of the United States and hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough. Historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626, for the equivalent of US$1050, Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013.

Manhattan (YTB-779)

Manhattan (YTB‑779/YT-800) is a United States Navy Natick-class large harbor tug named for Manhattan, New York.

Construction

The contract for Manhattan was awarded 31 January 1964. She was laid down on 1 October 1964 at Marinette, Wisconsin, by Marinette Marine and launched 15 July 1965.

Operational history

Assigned to the Pacific Fleet, Manhattan transited the Panama Canal and steamed to Hawaii for duty in the US Naval Shipyard at Pearl Harbor.

Manhattan served in Viet Nam between November 1966 and September 1968.

After Viet Nam, Manhattan was assigned to Naval Submarine Base Bangor.

Stricken from the Navy List 1 October 2004, Manhattan was sold by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS), 23 August 2005, to Grant Westmoreland, LMW Investments Inc. for $151,888.

Ex-Manhattan was converted to twin z-drive and reacquired by the US Navy, 7 October 2008 and was designated as unnamed yard tug YT-800.

Manhattan (TV series)

Manhattan, sometimes styled MANH(A)TTAN, is an American television drama series based on the project of the same name that produced the first nuclear weapons. While some historical figures are referenced in Manhattan, most characters are fictional, and the show is not intended to maintain historical accuracy.

The series premiered on WGN America on July 27, 2014. The series was canceled after its second season.

Plot

Set in 1943 and 1944 at the time of the Manhattan Project, the series focuses on Los Alamos, New Mexico, a town the outside world knows nothing about. The federal government tells the scientists only what they need to know, while the scientists keep secrets from their families.

Though the TV show is not intended to be historically accurate, it does reference many aspects of the actual Manhattan Project, and some actual historical figures such as head scientist Robert Oppenheimer. However, other contributors to the Manhattan Project, such as Nobel Laureates Enrico Fermi and Emilio G. Segrè, do not appear.
