Nail (unit)

A nail, as a unit of cloth measurement, is generally a sixteenth of a yard or 2¹⁄₄ inches (5.715 cm). The nail was apparently named after the practice of hammering brass nails into the counter at shops where cloth was sold. On the other hand, R D Connor, in The weights and measures of England (p 84) states that the nail was the 16th part of a Roman foot, i.e., digitus or finger, although he provides no reference to support this.Zupko's A dictionary of weights and measures for the British Isles (p 256) states that the nail was originally the distance from the thumbnail to the joint at the base of the thumb, or alternately, from the end of the middle finger to the second joint.

An archaic usage of the term nail is as a sixteenth of a (long) hundredweight for mass, or 1 clove of 7 pound avoirdupois (3.175 kg).

Explanation: Katherine and Petruchio are getting married. At the tailor shop, they examine the wedding dress, which is nearly finished. Petruchio is concerned that it has too many frills, wonders what it will cost, and suspects that he has been cheated. Katherine says she likes it, and complains that Petruchio is making a fool of her. The taylor repeats Katherine's words: Sir, she says you're making a fool of her. This is where Petruchio launches into the above-quoted tirade. Monstrous may be a double-entendre for cuckold. The half-yard, quarter and nail were divisions of the yard used in cloth measurement.

Nail (fastener)

In woodworking and construction, a nail is a pin-shaped object of metal (or wood, called a treenail or "trunnel") which is used as a fastener, as a peg to hang something, or sometimes as a decoration. Generally nails have a sharp point on one end and a flattened head on the other, but headless nails are available. Nails are made in a great variety of forms for specialized purposes. The most common is a wire nail. Other types of nails include pins, tacks, brads, and spikes.

Nails are typically driven into the workpiece by a hammer, a pneumatic nail gun, or a small explosive charge or primer. A nail holds materials together by friction in the axial direction and shear strength laterally. The point of the nail is also sometimes bent over or clinched after driving to prevent pulling out.

Nail (album)

Nail is the fourth studio album by Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel. It was released in October 1985, through record labels Self Immolation and Some Bizzare.

Background

The album incorporates a variety of musical genres, including classical and industrial rock, and the lyrics are often esoteric. For example, the tempo and instrumentation in "Descent into the Inferno" is infrequent: the song's first half is sparse and percussive; in the latter stages the song gathers momentum and features synthesizers. "The Overture from Pigdom Come", a composition resembling a classical piece of music, is juxtaposed with perhaps the most brutal track on the album, "Private War", a track that features one minute of various grinding noises.

There are various obscure references within the songs, some more lucid than others. "The Throne of Agony" has the lyrics "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew me well", a paraphrase of a line from Shakespeare's Hamlet (Hamlet: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio..."). The line "Turn on, tune in, drop out" in "DI-1-9026" refers to the Timothy Leary phrase. Jack and the Beanstalk is also referenced, with a variation of the chant "Fee, fie, foe, fum!" appearing in the final track.

Delta Machine

Delta Machine is the thirteenth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode, released on 22 March 2013 by Columbia Records and Mute Records. Recorded in 2012 in Santa Barbara, California and New York City, the album was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. A deluxe edition was also released, containing a bonus disc with four bonus tracks, as well as a 28-page hardcover book including photos by Anton Corbijn.

"Heaven" was released as the album's lead single on 31 January 2013. The second single from the album, "Soothe My Soul", was released on 10 May 2013. followed by "Should Be Higher" on 11 October 2013. Following the album's release, Depeche Mode embarked on the Delta Machine Tour, which kicked off in Nice, France on 4 May 2013, and wrapped up in Moscow on 7 March 2014.

Background and composition

According to Dave Gahan, Delta Machine marks the end of the trilogy of records that Depeche Mode were recording with producer Ben Hillier.

The album is Martin Gore and Gahan's thematic continuation to a dark, gloomy and bluesy aesthetic that Depeche Mode had started to explore in the late 1980s. The Quietus writer Luke Turner viewed it as the band's "most powerful, gothic, twisted, electronic album since Violator".

Broken (Seether song)

"Broken" is a song by post-grunge/alternative metal South-African band Seether featuring American singer Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence and former girlfriend of Seether vocalist Shaun Morgan. It was recorded in 2004 and was later included in Disclaimer II. This version includes electric guitar and violins. It peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 3 on the ARIA singles chart. It was later certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). It is the band's biggest pop hit and the band's only Top 40 hit, reaching #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although, until the 2014 release of "Words as Weapons", it was often considered Seether's most popular track and the only song to enter and crossover to the pop and adult contemporary charts, it is not their highest-charting single on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and Modern Rock Tracks chart where a few singles, such as "Fine Again" and "Fake It", charted higher. Despite this, it was the most played song on most rock radio formats due to the pop success of the song. In addition, it still charted high peaking #9 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and #4 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
