Broch

A broch (pronunciation: /ˈbrɒx/) is an Iron Age drystone hollow-walled structure of a type found only in Scotland. Brochs belong to the classification "complex Atlantic Roundhouse" devised by Scottish archaeologists in the 1980s. Their origin is a matter of some controversy. The theory that they were defensive military structures (an Iron Age equivalent to the castles and tower houses of medieval Scotland) is not accepted by many modern archaeologists (see the 'general references' below), while the alternative notion that they were farmhouses is dismissed by some others. Although most stand alone in the landscape, some examples exist of brochs surrounded by clusters of smaller dwellings.

Origin and definition

The word broch is derived from Lowland Scots 'brough', meaning (among other things) fort. In the mid-19th century Scottish antiquaries called brochs 'burgs', after Old Norse borg, with the same meaning. Place names in Scandinavian Scotland such as Burgawater and Burgan show that Old Norse borg is the older word used for these structures in the north. Brochs are often referred to as 'duns' in the west. Antiquaries began to use the spelling 'broch' in the 1870s.

St. Catharines—Brock

St. Catharines—Brock was a provincial electoral division in Ontario, Canada containing the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake as well as the southern portion of the city of St. Catharines. It was created prior to the 1975 provincial election, and was abolished in 1999 when Ontario adjusted all of its provincial electoral divisions to match those at the federal level. With the riding being merged into the ridings of St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Niagara Centre.

Harris (train)

The Harris trains were the first steel-bodied Electric Multiple Unit train to operate on the suburban railway network of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They were introduced in 1956 by the Victorian Railways, and last operated in 1988, although a number of the carriages were converted for other uses and are still operating. They were named after Norman Charles Harris, Chairman of Commissioners of the Victorian Railways between 1940 and 1950.

Description

The Harris trains were commonly referred to as "Blue Trains" due to their deep blue colour, with only a yellow band about halfway up the body. Royal blue and yellow were common colours for the Victorian Railways rolling stock.

The trains had a saloon seating layout, divided into smaller sections by full height partitions. They were provided with either two or three sets of hand operated dual sliding doors per carriage side. Later sets were fitted with power doors. Interiors were split into smoking and no-smoking compartments until late 1978 with the abolition of smoking on trains, and carriages were designated as First or Second class until 1958 when one class travel was introduced. The trains were initially delivered without end gangways between carriages, this being a later addition.

Harris (band)

Harris was an American rock band formed in Lowell, Massachusetts in 2000. The group independently released one studio album, The Light Is Seeping Through the Cracks, along with numerous EPs, before disbanding in April 2009.

History

Harris was formed by vocalist/bassist Mike Nastri and guitarist Matt Scott in 2000 while they attended UMass Lowell. After releasing several EPs, Harris independently recorded, produced, and released their only full-length album, The Light Is Seeping Through the Cracks, in 2005. The album's release was followed by a self-booked tour of the United States and Canada, which was met with mixed reviews. Harris toured Europe in the summer of 2008, and amicably disbanded in April 2009 due to the members' increasing family and career obligations. Their final recording, Snake Says Woof, was released on April 18, 2009 at their last show, which took place at the legendary Middle East Downstairs nightclub in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Music

Harris's music was rooted in rock but was made up of diverse styles, with influences such as The Police. The Boston Herald described the band's music as a dynamic mix of "smooth sounds and harsher, heavier clashes". "We try to mix as many genres as we possibly can and try to come out with a coherent, original sound," drummer Rob Lynch described. Harris had a shared writing process among its five members, who would switch instruments in order to share ideas. Harris frequently played in the Boston area, and was described by Northeast Performer as a "comforting presence in local rock."
