Brilliant!

Brilliant! was a group exhibition of contemporary art held at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA between 22 October 1995 and 7 January 1996. The exhibition then traveled to the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Texas - where it was on view between 17 February and 14 April 1996.

Theme and content

The exhibition sought to showcase a burgeoning group of English artists now known as the YBAs. The Walker's press material, defining the criteria for selection of artists in the exhibition, says:

Brill!ant

Brilliant, stylised as Brill!ant is the eleventh studio album by the British synthpop band Ultravox, released on 25 May 2012 by Chrysalis Records. It is the first new album in 28 years by the classic Ultravox line-up of Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross, the last one being 1984's Lament. The title track of the album was announced as the lead single, which premiered on 17 April 2012 on BBC Radio 2.

Brilliant debuted at number twenty-one on the UK Albums Chart, selling 6,100 copies in its first week, but received mixed reviews from critics.

Brilliant is a 2004 thriller film starring Erika Eleniak and Bruce Boxleitner.

Plot

Elizabeth Braden (Deborah Kelly) is a promising medical student working with renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Dietrich (Boxleitner) on a high-tech research facility. Their work consists of finding a drug that would enhance memory. However, Elizabeth wakes up one day realizing that seven days have been stolen from her own memory. To find out what happened, she seeks the help of her friend, Ricky (Eleniak) and her lover, Joel (Matthew Boylan). But she soon realizes that there is nobody she can trust.

Filming

The film was shot through several locations on Quebec, Canada. Some of the locations used for the film were John Abbott College, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, and Mirabel International Airport in Montreal, Oka Beach in Oka, and the city of Mirabel.

Brilliant (band)

Brilliant were a British pop/rock group active in the 1980s. Although not commercially successful and mauled by the critics, they remain notable because of the personnel involved - Martin Glover aka Youth, formerly of Killing Joke and subsequently a top producer/remixer; Jimmy Cauty, later to find fame and fortune as one half of The KLF; and (prior to the band signing with WEA) Ben Watkins aka Juno Reactor. Equally notable was their management (David Balfe), their record company A&R manager (Bill Drummond, the other member of The KLF), and songwriting and production team (Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman known as Stock Aitken Waterman).

Career

Brilliant first came to life in 1982, as post-punk band Killing Joke was crumbling under internal conflicts. Unsatisfied with his bandmates' following of the occult lifestyle, Killing Joke's bass player Youth decided to call it quits and recorded an angry slandering song against his former bandmates. The song, "That's What Good Friends Are For...", an obvious mock of Killing Joke's second album What's THIS for...?, was credited to "Brilliant", which was a name of a Killing Joke B-side and a general 1980s buzzword.

Brilliant, Alabama

Brilliant is a town in Marion County, Alabama, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 900, up from 762 in 2000.

History

The present Town of Brilliant was incorporated in 1927 as Boston, Alabama and was named for the City of Boston, Massachusetts and in part for early settlers of the area, the Bostick family. In the late part of the 19th century, the discovery of coal led to the development of the Brilliant Coal Company, which was located adjacent to the town of Boston. The Brilliant Coal Company served as a catalyst for growth for the area and provided ample employment for more than 50 years. At the turn of the 20th century, the Brilliant and Boston area was the most densely populated part of Marion County. In 1957 due to declines in industry and population the post office at Boston, Alabama was absorbed into the Brilliant, Alabama post office. The history of Boston, Alabama changed forever with the passage of Act 284 by the Alabama Legislature, which changed the name of the town of Boston to Brilliant. By the end of the 1950s The Brilliant Coal Company had shuttered its mining operations, however several smaller mining operations were in business around the area until the early 1990s. From 1987 until 2000 the town was home to Brilliant Homes Ltd. a well known manufactured housing producer in the southeast and parts of the southwest. The company was acquired by American Homestar Corporation of League City, Texas in 1997, due to the declining manufactured housing industry the plant was closed on April 15, 2000, American Homestar Corporation subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy later in 2001. The town is currently home to one garment manufacturing plant, Tullahoma Industries which produces garments for the U.S. Army.
