Brian Shaw

Brian Keith Shaw (born March 22, 1966) is a retired American professional basketball player and former head coach for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). At 6'6" he could play both guard positions, but was used primarily at point guard over the course of his 14 seasons in the league. He is known for his alley-oop passes to former teammate Shaquille O'Neal, and for his clutch plays, especially against the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2000 NBA Playoffs.

Early life

Shaw grew up in Oakland, California with other future basketball stars such as Antonio Davis, Jason Kidd, and Gary Payton, as well as Demetrius "Hook" Mitchell. He attended Westlake Middle School and then Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland. For college, he attended St. Mary's College of California for his freshman and sophomore years of college, then transferred to UC Santa Barbara for his junior and senior seasons. In his senior year, he was named Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) player of the year as he led the Gauchos to their first ever NCAA tournament berth. He was taken with the 24th overall pick by the Boston Celtics in the 1988 NBA Draft.

Brian Shaw (ice hockey, born 1962)

Brian Shaw (born May 20, 1962) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in 4th round (78 overall) of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft.

Shaw played junior hockey with the Portland Winter Hawks, and was a member of the 1981–82 Portland team which won the President's Cup as WHL Champions. He went on to play five seasons in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League registering a combined total of 224 points and 506 penalty minutes in 315 professional games.

Shaw is the nephew of the late coach Brian C. Shaw.

Early life

Brian Shaw was born in Fort Lupton, Colorado to Jay and Bonnie Shaw. Both his parents were taller than average, his father standing at 6 feet (1.83 m) and his mother 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m). However, it has been noted that he did have uncles of exceptional stature.

At Fort Lupton High School Shaw excelled in basketball. Upon graduating, he was 240 pounds. He then attended Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado. There he was able to form an inside combination with current Northwestern State Assistant Coach Bob Austin. Shaw was one of the team leaders for the Rattlers in his sophomore season. Following Otero he went to Black Hills State University where he was on a full basketball scholarship and received a degree in wellness management. During his basketball career he was "hooked on the weights," and Shaw has said that the weight room is his sanctuary. In addition to huge hands and size-16 feet he was also a naturally very powerful person. In his own words "I've always been able to do this. The biggest tire, the heaviest stone . . . I've always been able to walk up and lift it. Odd strength is what it is, not weight-room strength. It's brute strength, brute power."

Brian Shaw (dancer)

Brian Shaw (28 June 1928 – 2 April 1992) was a British ballet dancer and teacher. As a leading dancer with the Royal Ballet during the 1950s and 1960s, he was widely regarded as "one of the finest classical male dancers of his generation".

Early life and training

Brian Earnshaw was born in Huddersfield, England, a large market town in West Yorkshire, halfway between Leeds and Manchester. Having begun his dance studies in his home town, he moved to London as a teenager and continued his training at the Sadler's Wells Ballet School. In the summer of 1943, in the midst of World War II, Londoners were "keeping calm and carrying on," as they were advised to do by the British Ministry of Information. In July, the Production Club of the Royal Academy of Dancing arranged a matinee performance of Sadler's Wells students in Suite of Dances, set by resident choreographer Andrée Howard to Handel's jauntily life-affirming Water Music. Among the talented students dancing that afternoon were Philip Chatfield and Brian Earnshaw, both of whom were destined to have distinguished careers with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, later known as the Royal Ballet.

Brian Shaw, CFA, is a financial industry executive with particular expertise in capital market and investing activities, and is a private investor and corporate advisor. He was the Chairman and CEO of CIBC World Markets from 2005 through 2008 and prior to that managed the Global Equities Division for a number of years. He is currently a Corporate Director for Encana Corporation, as well as NuVista Energy Ltd. (an oil and gas resource company), Manulife Bank of Canada (a private chartered bank), Manulife Trust Company (a private trust company) and Ivey Canadian Exploration Ltd. (a private exploration company).

Early career

He received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Alberta in 1977. He joined [Wood Gundy] in 1985 and held a series of management positions in Institutional Equities and served as its Head of the division since 1997. Mr. Shaw served as Vice President at Wood Gundy since 1989 and he served as its Director since 1992. In 2001, under his leadership, the US Equities Division (formerly, Oppenheimer) was merged with Institutional Equities. Mr. Shaw was also employed in an investment capacity with a Canadian Chartered Bank.
