Brian Mullins

Brian Mullins (born 27 September 1954 in Dublin, Ireland) is a former Gaelic football manager and former player. He played football with his local club St. Vincent's and was a member of the Dublin senior inter-county team from 1974 until 1985. Mullins later served as manager of both Dublin and Derry. He is regarded as one of Dublin's greatest-ever players. He is a nephew of former Kerry great Bill Casey, who played with Kerry in the 1930s and 40s.

Biography

Mullins was born in Dublin in 1954. He received his primary and secondary education in Dublin before later attending Thomond College in Limerick. Here Mullins completed a Bachelor of Arts in physical education and Irish.

Mullins subsequently returned to Dublin where he secured a teaching job in Greendale Community School in Kilbarrack on the north side of the city. Here he taught his degree subjects as well history and geography. In 1980 he took eighteen months leave of absence from Greendale to complete a Master of Arts in athletics administration at New York University.

Early life and education

Mullins is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he obtained his bachelor degree, studying electrical and mechanical engineering. In an interview with Fortune, Mullins attributed the Academy with learning determination. "There were so many times where we were challenged mentally and physically to try and unlock the potential inside of us, and I learned that sometimes, even when you are getting yelled at and told how much of a failure you are, the real accomplishment is learning to keep going in the face of adversity."

Career

Mullins fulfilled his service obligation as an engineer with the United States Department of Transportation, working at the Computer-Aided Operational Research Facility. While at the DOT, he worked in the field of simulation and later advised the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego, California. After spending three years at SPAWAR, Mullins transitioned into the field of industrial robotics.

Inter-county

Mullins first came to prominence on the inter-county scene with the Offaly in late 2002 as a sub but did regain his place until 2007 due to the retirement of Shane O'Connor. Mullins retired from Inter-county hurling on November 18, 2010.
