Brendan Murphy (Carlow footballer)

Brendan Murphy (born 26 March 1989) (Irish: Breandán Ó Murchú) is an Irish sportsman from Rathvilly, County Carlow. He plays football for the Carlow senior football team, and for his local club Rathvilly.

In Ireland

Murphy played minor football for Carlow and was star of the team that lost the Leinster minor football championship final in 2007. Carlow lost in Round 1 of the championship to Longford, but recovered in the playoffs, causing a massive shock in beating Meath and Wexford, before beating Westmeath and Louth to reach the final.

For a while, it looked like Murphy might miss the final through suspension after receiving a straight red card in the semi final against Louth. However, this was overturned on appeal, after video evidence showed that Murphy had been incorrectly disciplined by the referee, and he lined out against Laois in the final at Croke Park.

Carlow trailed by 3-6 to 6 points at half time (all three goals coming from corner forward Conor Meredith), but staged a heroic comeback that included a goal from Jordan Lowry. But spurned chances, including a goal chance for David Kinsella and a missed penalty by Cormac Mullins, saw the comeback fall short, as Laois took yet another minor championship crown on a score of 3-8 to 1-12.

Brendan Murphy (Meath footballer)

Brendan Murphy (born on 19 August 1975) is a former Irish footballer who played soccer for the Republic of Ireland U21 and B national teams and Gaelic football for Meath .

Career

Soccer

Murphy played as a goalkeeper with Bradford City and Wimbledon where he played for 5 seasons. Murphy did not play in a league match for Wimbledon, but he appeared in Intertoto Cup matches. In 1999 Murphy moved back to Ireland where he played for a season with Dundalk before returning to play his final 2-year stint in England with Kidderminster Harriers in 2000. Murphy won eight Republic of Ireland under-21 caps and one B cap. He was also called up to the senior team by manager Mick McCarthy for an away international friendly match against Wales in 1997, although he remained an unused substitute.

Gaelic football

Murphy subsequently returned home to Trim, County Meath where he began playing Gaelic football for Trim GAA. In 2005 he was called up to the Meath senior squad under Seán Boylan. He made his senior inter-county debut on 9 January in an O'Byrne Cup match against Kildare before becoming a more permanent member of the squad in 2006. At the end of the 2008 campaign Murphy retired from Gaelic football and switched back to soccer to play for Longford Town but then rejoined Meath in 2010. Murphy announced his retirement from Inter-county and international football in December 2011.

Saint Brendan of Clonfert or Bréanainn of Clonfert (c. 484 – c. 577) (Irish: Naomh Breandán; Latin: Brendanus; Icelandic: (heilagur) Brandanus) called "the Navigator", "the Voyager", or "the Bold" is one of the early Irish monastic saints. He is chiefly renowned for his legendary quest to the "Isle of the Blessed," also called Saint Brendan's Island. The Voyage of Saint Brendan could be called an immram (Irish navigational story). He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

Saint Brendan's feast day is celebrated on 16 May by the Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and Orthodox Christians.

There is very little secure information concerning Brendan's life, although at least the approximate dates of his birth and death, and accounts of some events in his life, are found in the Irish annals and genealogies. The first mention of Brendan occurs in Adamnan's Vita Sancti Columbae, written between 679 and 704. The first notice of him as a seafarer appears in the ninth century Martyrology of Tallaght.
