Brendan McCarthy

Brendan McCarthy is a British artist and designer best known for his work in comic books, film and television.

Biography

Brendan McCarthy was born in London. As a boy McCarthy soon began drawing his own home-made comics.

After leaving Chelsea Art College in London, where he studied film and Fine Art Painting, McCarthy decided to become a full-time artist. He created the independent comic book Sometime Stories with art college pal Brett Ewins. His first paid commercial work was a one-page strip Electrick Hoax in the British weekly music paper Sounds with another art school escapee, writer Peter Milligan in 1978. McCarthy held a solo exhibition of paintings, drawings and collages at Frestonia's Car Breaker Gallery in London, a squat in Ladbroke Grove's Republic of Frestonia.

McCarthy started working for 2000 AD including Judge Dredd and at the same time he was working on designs for his first television show – the unmade Dan Dare live-action television series for Lew Grade's ATV in the late 1970s. It was to have been a stylish retro 50's take on the classic Eagle hero with James Fox as Dan Dare.

Brendan McCarthy is an Irish film producer and screenwriter based in Dublin, Ireland. Together with John McDonnell, McCarthy runs the Oscar-winning production company Fantastic Films (Ireland).

Recent films include The Last Days on Mars (2013), the debut feature film from Oscar-nominated Irish director Ruairí Robinson, selected for Directors' Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival, 2013; the award-winning Stitches (movie) 2012, directed by Conor McMahon and starring Ross Noble and Tommy Knight, the Bollywood hit Ek Tha Tiger 2012, directed by Kabir Khan (director) and starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the critically acclaimed Hammer Horror Wake Wood 2011, directed by David Keating and starring Timothy Spall, Aidan Gillen and Eva Birthistle and Outcast (2010 film) directed by Colm McCarthy (director) and starring James Nesbitt, Kate Dickie and fellow Scottish actress Hannah Stanbridge, who received a Scottish BAFTA for her role in the film.

Brendan McCarthy is Film Adviser to Arts Council of Ireland, where he consults on both policy and project related issues. From 2001 to 2012 McCarthy acted as the Irish delegate to Eurimages. Eurimages is the European co-production fund based at the Council of Europe. He was active in the creation of policy and project selection during this time.

Brendan McCarthy (American football)

Brendan B. McCarthy (born August 6, 1945 – August 26, 1997) was an American football running back in the National Football League and American Football League. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 1968 Common Draft. In August of that year he was traded to the Detroit Lions for undisclosed future draft pick. McCarthy then moved on to the Atlanta Falcons, where he played in 7 games before being released by coach Norm Van Brocklin. McCarthy played 9 games over two seasons with the Denver Broncos before eventually moving on to real estate.

McCarthy died on August 26, 1997 after a heart attack at his vacation home on Deep Creek Lake.

Saint Brendan of Clonfert or Bréanainn of Clonfert (c. 484 – c. 577) (Irish: Naomh Breandán; Latin: Brendanus; Icelandic: (heilagur) Brandanus) called "the Navigator", "the Voyager", or "the Bold" is one of the early Irish monastic saints. He is chiefly renowned for his legendary quest to the "Isle of the Blessed," also called Saint Brendan's Island. The Voyage of Saint Brendan could be called an immram (Irish navigational story). He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

There is very little secure information concerning Brendan's life, although at least the approximate dates of his birth and death, and accounts of some events in his life, are found in the Irish annals and genealogies. The first mention of Brendan occurs in Adamnan's Vita Sancti Columbae, written between 679 and 704. The first notice of him as a seafarer appears in the ninth century Martyrology of Tallaght.
