Emigrate (album)

Emigrate is the first full-length self-titled studio album by the European band Emigrate. This album was released August 31, 2007 in Europe and was released in the United States and in Australia on January 29, 2008 but still has no Worldwide release dates.

The album was produced by band members Richard Z. Kruspe, Olsen Involtini and Arnaud Giroux, along with producer Jacob Hellner, who had previously worked with Kruspe in Rammstein. Unlike Rammstein, all the songs are sung in English.

Avril Lavigne: My World

Avril Lavigne: My World is the first DVD released by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne. The DVD consists of sixteen songs that Lavigne performed on her first live performance tour, the Try to Shut Me Up Tour at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. Most of the tracks are taken from her debut album, Let Go, while two of the songs are covers. It also features one B-side. On the live CD, three songs are covers, with one single.

World (Bee Gees song)

"World" is a song from the Bee Gees' fourth album Horizontal, released in 1967 in the United Kingdom. Though it was a big hit in Europe, Atco Records did not issue it as a single in the United States, having just issued a third single from Bee Gees' 1st, "Holiday".

The song's lyrics question the singer's purpose in life.

Recording

The song's first recording session was on 3 October 1967 along with "With the Sun in My Eyes" and "Words". The song's last recording session was on 28 October 1967. "World" was originally planned as having no orchestra, so all four tracks were filled with the band, including some mellotron or organ played by Robin. When it was decided to add an orchestra, the four tracks containing the band were mixed to one track and the orchestra was added to the other track. The stereo mix suffered since the second tape had to play as mono until the end when the orchestra comes in on one side. Barry adds: "'World' is one of those things we came up with in the studio, Everyone just having fun and saying, 'Let's just do something!' you know". Vince Melouney recalls: "I had this idea to play the melody right up in the top register of the guitar behind the chorus".

World (Five for Fighting song)

"World" is a song written and recorded by American recording artist Five for Fighting. It was released in November 2006 as the second single from the album Two Lights. It reached number 14 on the U.S. Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart.

Content

"World" is an upbeat, piano-driven melody that, like his other singles, paints vivid pictures of human life driven with deep emotion. The song's lyrics are notably more cryptic than in previous singles, but are driven by the chorus hooks, "What kind of world do you want?" and "Be careful what you wish for, history starts now."

Critical reception

Chuck Taylor, of Billboard magazine reviewed the song favorably, calling the song "admittedly more abstract" but the average listener will pick out certain lines and find a relatable message. He goes on to say that "alongside, the piano-driven, orchestrated melody is his most captivating yet lush and instantly memorable."

Music video

The music video for "World" features aspects of the bright side of life including children, marriage and fireworks. There are also references that go with the lyrics including a brief image of a mushroom cloud in a cup of coffee, with a newspaper's headline featuring North Korea's nuclear program. It was directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson.

World (band)

World is an experimental, psychedelic rock duo that features National Basketball Association player LeBron James playing bass guitar, Matthew Dellavedova on trumpet, J.R. Smith on the pipe and Honey Owens (of Valet, Nudge and Jackie-O Motherf***er). Their music is influenced by various flavours of folk music from across the globe. Their debut CD was released in late 2005 on Marriage Records.

Forkner and Owens also run the Yarnlazer record label.

PKA (irradiation)

A Primary Knock-on Atom or PKA is an atom that is displaced from its lattice site by irradiation; it is, by definition, the first atom that an incident particle encounters in the target. After it is displaced from its initial lattice site, the PKA can induce the subsequent lattice site displacements of other atoms if it possesses sufficient energy, or come to rest in the lattice at an interstitial site if it does not.

Most of the displaced atoms resulting from electron irradiation and some other types of irradiation are PKAs, since these are usually below the threshold displacement energy and do not have sufficient energy to displace more atoms. In other cases like fast neutron irradiation, most of the displacements result from higher energy PKAs colliding with other atoms as they slow down to rest.

Collision Models

Atoms can only be displaced if, upon bombardment, the energy they receive exceeds a threshold energy E_d. Likewise, when a moving atom collides with a stationary atom, both atoms will have energy greater than E_d after the collision only if the original moving atom had an energy exceeding 2E_d. Thus, only PKAs with an energy greater than 2E_d can continue to displace more atoms and increase the total number of displaced atoms. In cases where the PKA does have sufficient energy to displace further atoms, the same truth holds for any subsequently displaced atom.
