Boxed (app)

Boxed is a wholesale shopping app for iOS and Android. The app includes products in six categories; household, health and beauty, grocery, odds and ends, kids and diapers, and organic products. The app was launched in June 2013. Boxed has expanded and now can be accessed online where shopping is made easier for people of all ages because it is not only limited to the app.

Fortune magazine described Boxed the "Costco of mobile apps."

Overview

Since Boxed prices are wholesale, customer can save 25-50% on the majority of products compared to some stores. Boxed does not include a membership fee like other wholesale companies such as Costco and Sam's Club.

Boxed users get "rewards points" for each purchase. If a customer reaches 500 points, he or she can apply a $5 credit to an order. Boxed also has a referral program where customers can get Boxed credits after a friend they refer makes their first purchase.

Boxed's CEO told Fortune that "millions of people have tried the app."

JPEG

JPEG (/ˈdʒeɪpɛɡ/ JAY-peg) is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.

The term "JPEG" is an abbreviation for the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the standard. The MIME media type for JPEG is image/jpeg, except in older Internet Explorer versions, which provides a MIME type of image/pjpeg when uploading JPEG images. JPEG files usually have a filename extension of .jpg or .jpeg.

Graphical Environment Manager

The Graphical Environment Manager (GEM) was an operating environment created by Digital Research, Inc. (DRI) for use with the DOS operating system on the Intel 8088 and Motorola 68000 microprocessors.

GEM is known primarily as the graphical user interface (GUI) for the Atari ST series of computers, and was also supplied with a series of IBM PC-compatible computers from Amstrad. It also was available for standard IBM PC, at the time when the 6 MHz IBM PC AT (and the very concept of a GUI) was brand new. It was the core for a small number of DOS programs, the most notable being Ventura Publisher. It was ported to a number of other computers that previously lacked graphical interfaces, but never gained popularity on those platforms. DRI also produced FlexGem for their FlexOS real-time operating system.

GSX

GEM started life at DRI as a more general purpose graphics library known as GSX (Graphics System eXtension), written by a team led by Don Heiskell. Lee Lorenzen (at Graphic Software Systems, Inc.) who had recently left Xerox PARC (birthplace of the GUI) wrote much of the code. GSX was essentially a DRI-specific implementation of the GKS graphics standard proposed in the late 1970s. GSX was intended to allow DRI to write graphics programs (charting, etc.) for any of the platforms CP/M-80, CP/M-86 and MS-DOS (NEC APC-III) would run on, a task that would otherwise require considerable effort to port due to the large differences in graphics hardware (and concepts) between the various systems of that era.

Boxed (record label)

Boxed (legal name: Club Parasite Ltd.) was a record label that released around forty mix albums, mostly on cassette, from high profile DJs such as John Digweed, Nick Warren, and Danny Howells. The label was best known for its Global Underground series. Boxed eventually had financial difficulties, leading to no more releases after 2003. A new company, Global Underground Ltd. was formed, along with a sub-label GU Music, which has released Sasha's Involver and Fundacion NYC compilations. Global Underground owns the back catalogue of all Boxed releases.

Boxed (Mike Oldfield album)

Boxed is a compilation album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield, released in 1976. It features SQ system 4 channel quadraphonic remixed versions of his first three albums (Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn) and some collaborations.

Background

Boxed features quadraphonic remixed versions of his first three albums. Oldfield later explained that instead of being true 4 channel sound, the initial quad remix of Tubular Bells, released few months after the stereo version, was a "strange fake out-of-phase system", because it was so complex a mix without automation.

The quad remix of Tubular Bells on Boxed was entirely different and true 4 channel sound (later released on SACD). The Boxed-CD version still contains the SQ-encoded quad mixes and plays as normal stereo without a quad decoder. The SQ quad remix Hergest Ridge was the only version of the album available on CD (until the 2010 Mercury Records reissue, Deluxe Edition), as Oldfield disliked the original vinyl mix.
