Box Elder Canyon

Box Elder Canyon is a canyon located within the western slopes of the Wellsville Mountains, a branch of the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains in Utah, in the Western United States. It was created by a prehistoric river, which flowed as a tributary into the main pool of ancient Lake Bonneville, emerging east of present-day Brigham City, Utah. The western or lower mouth of Box Elder Canyon is located approximately 56 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah, via Interstate 15 and U.S. 91. The joint national highway routes of U.S. 89 and U.S. 91 join together at 1100 South Main Street to the west, and enter Box Elder Canyon two miles east of downtown Brigham City.

In addition to U.S. 89 and 91, Box Elder Canyon also contains Box Elder Creek, which flows westward from Mantua Reservoir, a moderately-sized water impoundment created in 1961 through the construction of an earthen-fill dam at the upper mouth of the canyon, adjacent to the small farming community of Mantua, Utah (pronounced by locals as "Man-a-way"). From Mantua, U.S.89 and 91 enters Dry Canyon for three miles before the combined routes reach their apex at Sardine Summit (5,981 feet). From there, the highway enters a mountain valley known as Dry Lake, before traversing Wellsville Canyon (often mistakenly called "Sardine Canyon") prior to entering the Cache Valley at Wellsville, Utah.

Acer negundo

Acer negundo is a species of maple native to North America. Box elder, boxelder maple, ash-leaved maple, and maple ash are its most common names in the United States; in Britain and Ireland it is also known as ashleaf maple.

Common names

Indicative of its familiarity to many people over a large geographic range, A. negundo has numerous common names.

The names "box elder" and "boxelder maple" are based upon the similarity of its whitish wood to that of boxwood and the similarity of its pinnately compound leaves to those of some species of elder. This is the only North American maple with compound leaves, though several Asian species also have them.

Other common names are based upon this maple's similarity to ash, its preferred environment, its sugary sap, a description of its leaves, its binomial name, and so on. These names include (but are not limited to) ash-, cut-, or three-leaf (or -leaved) maple; ash maple; sugar ash; Negundo maple; and river maple. In Canada it is commonly known as Manitoba maple and occasionally as elf maple. In Russia it is called American maple (Russian: американский клён) as well as ash-leaf maple (Russian: клён ясенелистный), and in Italian acero americano.

Box Elder is a 2008 American independent film. It was written and directed by Todd Sklar, his first feature film. The film stars Alex Rennie, Nick Renkoski, Chad Haas, as well as Sklar.

Plot

Box Elder follows best friends and roommates, John Scott (Sklar) Alex, Nick, and Chad (Haas) through their final years of college at the University of Missouri. The loose narrative structure is anchored by John's breakup with his girlfriend Laura (Hina Abdullah). The four dudes party, eat sandwiches, and repeatedly ignore their scholastic responsibilities.

Self-Distribution

In the Spring of 2008, Sklar and a number of cast and crew from the film toured the film from city to city, mostly focusing on college campuses and art-house cinemas. Sklar, via his distribution company, Range Life Entertainment, entered into direct 50-50 revenue-sharing deals with the majority of the theaters at which Box Elder screened. According to the filmmaker at numerous post-screening Q&A sessions, Sklar will be bringing Box Elder, along with a number of other films, back on the road and into theaters in the fall of 2008.
