Boogie Nights

Boogie Nights is a 1997 American drama film written, produced and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It is set in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley and focuses on a young nightclub dishwasher, who becomes a popular star of pornographic films, chronicling his rise in the Golden Age of Porn of the 1970s through to his fall during the excesses of the '80s. The film is an expansion of Anderson's mockumentary short film The Dirk Diggler Story (1988).

It stars Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy and Heather Graham. Robert Elswit served as cinematographer, Michael Penn composed the score and Dylan Tichenor edited the film. Leonardo DiCaprio was originally considered for the role of Eddie Adams, but was replaced by Wahlberg.

The film was released on October 10, 1997 and garnered critical acclaim. Many critics compared the film's style to the work of Robert Altman. It was also nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Anderson, Best Supporting Actress for Moore and Best Supporting Actor for Reynolds. The film's soundtrack also received acclaim.

Boogie Nights (song)

"Boogie Nights" is a 1977 single by the British-based funk-disco group Heatwave. It was the group's debut single and was written by Rod Temperton. It was included on Heatwave's debut album, Too Hot to Handle. The American actor and singer Clarke Peters performed backing vocals on the song.

History

The song became one of the best-known disco songs by a British group and charted at #2 in both the UK Singles Chart as well as the Billboard Hot 100. It also appeared on US Billboard R&B and dance charts during 1977. The song would reach number 1 in New Zealand. The single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). (The song did not chart in Ireland.)

The song has been covered many times by artists such as KC and the Sunshine Band, Will to Power, 911 and The Weather Girls. British boy-band Blue also performed the song in their live shows.

The song made an appearance in the 1978 films Eyes of Laura Mars and The Stud.

The original motion picture soundtrack to the 1997 film Boogie Nights is a two-disc set released between the end of that same year and the beginning of the next year.

The first soundtrack album, Boogie Nights: Music from the Original Motion Picture, was released October 7, 1997 in the United States. Boogie Nights 2: More Music from the Original Motion Picture, was released January 13, 1998.
