Boogaloo

Boogaloo or bugalú (also: shing-a-ling, Latin boogaloo, Latin R&B) is a genre of Latin music and dance which was popular in the United States in the 1960s. Although it came to prominence after the bossa nova and was influenced by the new drumbeat of modern samba, boogaloo originated in New York City mainly among teenage Cubans and Puerto Ricans. The style was a fusion of popular African American rhythm and blues (R&B) and soul music with mambo and son montuno, with songs in both English and Spanish. The American Bandstand television program introduced the dance and the music to the mainstream American audience.

Except for the name, the dance is unrelated to the electric boogaloo, a style of dance which developed decades later under the influence of funk music and hip-hop dance.

History

In the 1950s and '60s, African Americans in the United States listened to various styles of music, including jump blues, R&B and doo-wop. Puerto Ricans in New York City shared these tastes, but they also listened to genres like mambo or chachachá and Bossa Nova. There was a mixing of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, African Americans and others in clubs, whose bands tried to find common musical ground. Boogaloo was a result of this search, a marriage of many styles including Cuban son montuno, guaguancó, guajira, guaracha, mambo, and American R&B and soul.

Boogaloo (Nazareth album)

Boogaloo is the twentieth studio album by the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, released in August 1998. It was produced by Mike Ging.

It was the last studio recording to feature drummer and founding member Darrell Sweet, who died of a heart attack in 1999. The album also features guest performances by bassist Pete Agnew's son Lee, who later replaced Sweet as the band's drummer. The album was recorded at the Parkgate studios, Catsfield in East Sussex in 1997. 11 of the 12 tracks were remixed in early 1998, with horns and guitar overdubs added. During the original recording, the Hale-Bopp comet was clearly visible.

The character on the album artwork is known as 'Boogaloo'.

"Fyra bugg och en Coca Cola" ("Four chewing gums (Bugg was a brand of chewing gum that was popular in Sweden in the 60's-80's) and a Coca Cola"), also called "Fyra bugg", is a Swedish language song, written by Mikael Wendt and Christer Lundh. Swedish dansband and pop singer Lotta Engberg won the Swedish Melodifestivalen 1987 in Sweden with this song. The lyrics are about summer. Because of international advertising rules, the song was renamed to "Boogaloo" in the Eurovision Song Contest 1987.

    Single

On 13 February 1987, the single Fyra Bugg & en Coca Cola was released, with the song "En helt ny dag" as the B-side. The single peaked at #19 at the Swedish singles chart.

    Svensktoppen

On 19 April 1987 the song achieved first place in the Swedish chart Svensktoppen. Although Lotta Engberg had many hits throughout her career, Fyra Bugg & en Coca Cola is considered her signature song.

    Trivia

  • A Swedish television clip from 1987 featured to-be prime minister Carl Bildt doing sing-along to Fyra bugg och en Coca Cola when he visited a music studio. Bildt, who was wearing headphones, was distinctly off-key in his singing performance, and this clip has been used several times by comedy shows on Swedish television.

sieh mal her was wir hier machen
sieh mal her und gib fein acht
was die jungen leute jetzt so tragen
    auch die neu'ste installierung
    für den tollen neuen wagen
    haben wir schon längst begraben
    jeder trend ist nun tabu
    denn unser trend
denn noch keiner kennt ist boogaloo
