Fårö

Fårö is a small Baltic Sea island just off north of the island of Gotland, itself off mainland Sweden's southeastern coast. It is the second-largest island in the province. It has a population of fewer than 600 and has become a popular summer resort. The island has no banks, post offices, medical services or police. It has its own dialect (Faroymal, a dialect of Modern Gutnish), claimed to be the oldest language in Sweden.

Geography

The island is separated from Gotland by the narrow Fårö-strait, and connected by two car ferries, operated by the Swedish Transport Administration. It has a total area of 111.35 square kilometres (42.99 sq mi), of which 9.7 square kilometres (3.7 sq mi) are water areas or islets.

On the islands of Fårö and Gotland, rock formations called "Rauk" can be found. These were a result of erosion during the Ice age and are unique to Gotland and Fårö.

Fårö Church is on Fårö.

One of the asteroids in the Asteroid belt, 9358 Fårö, is named after the island.

Etymology

The name "Fårö" (in Gutnish "Faroy") is derived from the words "ö", meaning island, and "får-", which is a word associated with travel like in the Swedish word "färled" (fairway). The word Fårö probably means the island you have to travel to or the traveler's island. Mainland Swedes might misinterpret the name Fårö to be derived from får, the Swedish word for sheep, due to the many sheep on the island. However, the Gutnish word for sheep is "lamm" (similar to the Swedish word "lamm", meaning "lamb").

Für

Für is a Hungarian surname. Notable people with the surname include:

  • Anikó Für (born 1964), Hungarian actress
  • Emil Für, Hungarian artist
  • Lajos Für (1930–2013), Hungarian politician and historian
  • Fatherfucker

Fatherfucker is the third studio album by Canadian recording artist Peaches, released on September 23, 2003 by XL Recordings. Cover versions of Electric Six's "Gay Bar" and Berlin's "Sex (I'm A...)" are included as bonus tracks.

    Writing and development

Peaches penned and programmed all the music for Fatherfucker herself. She wrote "Kick It" specifically for Iggy Pop, and the two teamed up in Miami in March, 2003 to record it. Peaches told Rolling Stone, "The song is more about rock 'n' roll than sex."

    Composition

Musically, Fatherfucker is more rock-oriented than The Teaches of Peaches. "I Don't Give A ..." samples the Joan Jett song "Bad Reputation" as Peaches yells, "I don't give a fuck!" and "I don't give a shit!" during the song.

    Critical reception

Fatherfucker received generally favorable reviews. The album holds a score of 70 out of 100 on the review aggregator website Metacritic. Andrew Magilow of Splendid Magazine said, "It's filthy, low-budget fun that's still plenty fucked up, whether you're a first-timer or a hardcore Peaches fanatic." Heather Phares of Allmusic described Fatherfucker as "neither the triumph or the disaster that it could've been." By contrast, Robert Christgau simply noted, "I Don't Give a . . . " Similarly, Andy Battaglia of The A.V. Club wrote that "nearly all of Fatherfucker falls back into ostensibly bracing anthems that sound plain stupid in such abundance."
