Project MKUltra—sometimes referred to as the CIA's mind control program—was the code name given to an illegal program of experiments on human subjects, designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs, alcohol, stick and poke tattoos, and procedures to be used in interrogations and torture, in order to weaken the individual to force confessions through mind control. Organized through the Scientific Intelligence Division of the CIA, the project coordinated with the Special Operations Division of the U.S. Army's Chemical Corps. The program began in the early 1950s, was officially sanctioned in 1953, was reduced in scope in 1964, further curtailed in 1967 and officially halted in 1973. The program engaged in many illegal activities; in particular it used unwitting U.S. and Canadian citizens as its test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy. MKUltra used numerous methodologies to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.
Mk Ultra was an American alternative band that played between 1994 and 1999. The group formed in the Bay Area in the early nineties and went on to become a hit in local circles. Mk Ultra's career culminated in a national tour in 1999 but came to a rapid end when guitarist John Tyner decided to leave. The other members, already working on side projects, did not wish to find a replacement.
Much of Mk Ultra's style has been carried on by John Vanderslice and his new band.
MK-ULTRA (also spelled Mk-Ultra, MK Ultra, or Mk Ultra) was a hardcore/thrash band from Chicago, Illinois formed in 1993. They were known for their fast music and outspokenness on political and social topics ranging from capitalism to Christianity. Due to "legal troubles", the band was forced to drop the name "MK-ULTRA" in 1999. They finally broke up in 2000, although the band continued donating songs to compilations for some years afterwards. MK-ULTRA went on 3 tours, including "roughly 26 states and Montreal".
Drummer Ebro Virumbrales also played in well-known hardcore bands Charles Bronson and Los Crudos at the same time as MK-ULTRA. Singer Frank Hanney went on to form Fourteen or Fight and The O.S.S. Jeff Jelen went on to form Punch in the Face with Ebro Virumbrales on vocals, VMW with Mark McCoy on vocals, and American Mosquito with former vocalist Jeff Bachner. Kirk Syrek plays bass currently in Sick/Tired and also in another band, Pillage, with Ebro Virumbrales. Original drummer Gary Cihak went on to form Government for Hire.
Body Rock is a 1984 film directed by Marcelo Epstein about a young man "from the streets" with a talent for break-dancing. It stars Lorenzo Lamas in the lead role of 'Chilly'. The film featured music by Laura Branigan. The theme was sung by Maria Vidal, which peaked at #48 on the Hot 100, #8 on the US dance charts, and #11 in the UK.
Lamas was nominated for Worst Actor at the Golden Raspberry Awards for his performance. He also performed the track "Fools Like Me" which became his only single to date to crack the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In his book The Official Razzie Movie Guide, John J. B. Wilson, founder of the Golden Raspberry Awards, listed the film as one of The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made.
Maria Vidal (born Maria Elena Fernandez-Vidal 1 August 1956) is an American singer-songwriter, who had one hit single with the song "Body Rock" (#48 on the Hot 100) (the theme song to the film Body Rock) in 1984; it also reached #8 on the US dance charts, #5 in South Africa and #11 in the UK.
Vidal, a native of Miami, was originally a member of the band Desmond Child & Rouge but went solo with a self-titled debut album recorded in 1987. The album included the single "Do Me Right" written by ex-bandmate Desmond Child.
Vidal contributed backup vocals to Kiss' Paul Stanley's 1978 solo album, The Smithereens' 1989 single "A Girl Like You" and Stevie Nicks' 1985 single "I Can't Wait".
She also appeared in the 1985 horror comedy film, Once Bitten, as a member of a high school band and contributed two songs to the soundtrack.
Vidal wrote and featured in a song for Tupac Shakur. Vidal also wrote "Every Time it Rains" for Ace of Base and "In the Grand Canyon" for Reggaeton artist James Joseph. In 1989, she wrote the Belinda Carlisle hit "Summer Rain", which was covered in 2004 by Slinkee Minx. In 2008 she released the song "Green", written for an international festival at the American School in London, and made available for purchase as an MP3 on her website. In May 2009 Maria Vidal announced the release of her new album Living in Radical Radiance. The album can be downloaded on her website or ordered through the website shop.
I spit my faith on the city pavement
To keep a smile
I bought my legs from the US Government
To keep me in line
We are the ones that keep you high
We are the ones that warm the sky
And you're burning bright
I filled my head with another replacement
To keep me high
I shot my soul when they wanted to take it
Your worst ain't mine
We are the ones that keep you down
We are the ones that warm the ground
While our arms surround
She's my river of sunshine, she's my girl
She can save the US, save the world
Yeah she's alright, I'll be fine
There's no US, save your mind
Save your mind come on
I'll give you nothin if you're just gonna waste it
But that's alright
I'll give you love if your wanting the taste that leaves you behind
We are the ones that keep you high
We are the ones that burn your pride
And you're burning bright
I've been waitin for the sun to come, lead me through the gates of Rome
Your gonna know they were never, never yours to kill
Oh no they were never, never yours to kill
I've been waitin for the sun to come, show you all what's being done
Your gonna know they were never, never yours to kill
