Bobby Lewis

Bobby Lewis (born February 17, 1933, Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American rock and roll and rhythm and blues singer.

Lewis learned to play the piano by age six. Adopted at age twelve, he moved to a home in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up with the influences of the pioneer blues musicians until the advent of rock and roll, Lewis began to build a musical career in the 1950s, and in 1960 appeared at the Apollo Theatre in New York City.

In July 1961, his recording of "Tossin' and Turnin'" went to No.1 for seven weeks on the Billboard chart. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. Later that year, he had a second Top Ten song, "One Track Mind", his only other major hit record, at No. 9.

"Tossin' And Turnin'", composed by Ritchie Adams and Malou Rene, was featured on the soundtrack for the 1978 film Animal House. The song was also covered by Steve Goodman, the Replacements, the Guess Who, Peter Criss, and Jimmy Sturr, among others. (The Ivy League's UK hit "Tossin' And Turnin", however, is a completely different song.)

Bobby Lewis (country singer)

Bobby Lewis (born May 9, 1942 in Hodgenville, Kentucky) is an American country music singer-songwriter. Between 1963 and 1985, Lewis released ten albums and charted more than twenty-five songs on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. His biggest hit, "How Long Has It Been," peaked at Number 6 in 1966. Lewis released a whopping 26 Country charted singles from 1966 to 1985, with 14 for United Artists, 5 for Ace Of Hearts, two with GRT, 3 for RPA and one each for Capricorn and HME. Lewis also released a total of 9 albums with United Artists.

Lewis earned the title "The Boy with the Lute," being perhaps the only country singer to use this instrument, which is actually a custom 6-string guitar-lute. Lewis's lute is very similar to a standard acoustic guitar, but not without some tonal differences. Lewis is probably the only artist in country music who plays a lute at live performances and in the recording studio.

Lewis became a member of the Grand Ole Opry and continues to perform and record new material. Lewis's recent studio albums were released by Heart Of Texas music, an independent classic country label which records new albums and hosts package concerts and tours showcasing classic country artists from yesterday and today.

Bobby Lewis (basketball, born 1946)

Robert F. "Bobby" Lewis, M.Ed. (born July 25, 1946) is an American former college basketball player known for his flamboyant dribbling, passing, and play-making. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lewis was a playground and YMCA legend from an early age. His legend grew while at John Bartram High School where he was able to showcase the many moves he adapted from his Hall of Fame mentor, Guy Rodgers.

Early years

Before focusing on basketball, Lewis excelled at table tennis and baseball. In 1960 he was invited to the Youth Table Tennis National Championships in New York, NY after becoming the City of Philadelphia champion. Lewis along with three other youth sports standouts were participants in the TastyKake Baking Company's "Salute to Youth" Campaign that same year. In 1963 he was a member of the City Championship Baseball team along with Major League Baseball Scout Hall of Famer Al Goldis. The following year he was selected for the 1st Team All City Basketball Team and was also selected as an Eastern Region High School Basketball All American along with Hall of Famer Lew Alcindor.

Robert Franklin Lewis (born March 20, 1945) is a retired American basketball player.

Lewis grew up in Northwest Washington, DC and developed a lot of his skills at the Jelleff's Boys Club in Georgetown,under the tutelage of Joe Branzell.

He played in high school at DC's St. John's College High School, playing for coach Joe Gallagher.

In his junior year, Lewis averaged 25.4 ppg, scoring a season high 40 vs the Georgetown frosh, and was named first team All Met.

In his Sr year, Lewis was the Daily News SSA Player of the Year, named first team All Met for the second year in a row, and capped it off with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show as a Parade Magazine All American for 1963.

He then played for Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, where he played an integral role on the 1967 ACC Champion and Final Four team. He averaged 27.4 points per game in 1966, the second-highest single-season average in UNC history. On December 16, 1965, he scored 49 points against Florida State, the most ever for a UNC player. He currently ranks tenth all time in scoring at UNC with 1,836 career points.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.
