Bob Shaw

Robert "Bob" Shaw (31 December 1931 – 11 February 1996) was a science fiction writer and fan from Northern Ireland, noted for his originality and wit. He won the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 1979 and 1980. His short story "Light of Other Days" was a Hugo Award nominee in 1967, as was his novel The Ragged Astronauts in 1987.

Life

Shaw was born and raised in Belfast, the eldest of three sons of a policeman. He learned of science fiction at about 11 years old when he read an A. E. van Vogt short story in an early edition of Astounding Science-Fiction magazine. He later described the experience as being more significant and long-lasting than taking LSD. He attended Belfast College of Technology. In 1950 he joined the group Irish Fandom which met at the house of James White, another Northern Irish science fiction writer, on Upper Newtonards Road. The group was influential in the early history of science fiction fandom and produced fanzines Hyphen and Slant, to the latter of which Shaw contributed material. Shaw acquired the nickname "BoSh" during this period. He published his first science-fiction short story in 1951, followed by several others.

Robert Shaw (15 September 1915 – 3 January 2005), born Robert Gottschall, was an American actor. A United States Army Lieutenant Colonel in World War II and Korean War, he was buried at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Robert Shaw (May 22, 1921 – April 10, 2011) was an American football end in the National Football League.

Shaw lettered three times each in football, basketball and track at Fremont Ross High School. He was first team All-Ohio in both football and basketball and won the shot put and discus in the state track and field meet. At Ohio State University, he lettered twice in football. Playing right end, on both offense and defense, Shaw was part of the Buckeyes' first NCAA National Championship team in 1942 and was named a first-team All American for that season. He also lettered in basketball and track, helping the Buckeyes to their first Western Conference track crown in 1942. Shaw was inducted into Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

He served with the 104th Infantry Division, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He later completed his bachelor's degree in education at Otterbein College.

His National Football League career began in 1945 when he joined the Cleveland Rams. The Rams won the Championship in his rookie year. In the off-season, he played for the Toledo Jeeps of the National Basketball League.

Bob Shaw (baseball)

Robert John Shaw (June 29, 1933 – September 23, 2010) was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) player from Garden City, New York. A right-handed pitcher, he played on seven teams for eleven seasons, 1957 through 1967. In 1962, he was a National League (NL) All-Star player. In 1966, he led the National League with a perfect 1.000 fielding average as pitcher.

He pitched for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Athletics, Milwaukee Braves, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs. In 1959, he won 18 games for the American League pennant-winning White Sox. The White Sox lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games, but not before Shaw defeated Sandy Koufax with a 1–0 shutout in Game 5.

Shaw holds the major-league record for the most balks by a pitcher in one game. He balked 5 times pitching for the Braves on May 4, 1963 against the Chicago Cubs.

Shaw was an alumnus of St. Lawrence University.

After his professional playing days were over, Shaw managed the Florida State League's Daytona Beach Dodgers and was a pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers. Shaw, 77, died of liver cancer on September 23, 2010.

Robert J. Shaw (born 24 December 1944) is an Australian professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s.

Shaw was born in Sydney. He turned professional in 1965.

Shaw played in Europe in the 1960s, winning the Spanish Open in 1968. His best finishes in PGA Tour events were a T-2 at both the 1969 Tallahassee Open and the 1971 Greater Milwaukee Open plus a win at the 1972 Tallahassee Open with a 15-under-par 273 by two strokes over Leonard Thompson. His best finish in a major was T20 at the 1972 PGA Championship.
