Bob Ferris

Robert Eugene Ferris (born May 7, 1955 in Arlington, Virginia) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. The 6'6", 225 lb. right-hander was drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1976 amateur draft, and he played for the Angels in 1979 and 1980.

Ferris was called up to the Angels after a 14-7 season with the Salt Lake City Gulls of the Pacific Coast League, and made his major league debut in relief on September 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park. He pitched one inning against the Chicago White Sox (top of the 8th) and gave up one earned run, a home run to Thad Bosley. Ferris struck out Jim Morrison to end the inning.

His finest major league effort came on September 26, 1979 against the Kansas City Royals at Anaheim Stadium. He pitched five innings in relief and gave up just one run, and it was unearned. In his two big league games in 1979 he had an earned run average of 1.50.

In 1980, he appeared in five more games for California, including three starts, and was not as successful. He allowed 32 baserunners (23 hits and 9 walks) in just 15.1 innings, and gave up 10 earned runs. He was 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA.

Bob Ferris (Likely Lads)

Robert Andrew Scarborough "Bob" Ferris is a fictional character in British sitcoms The Likely Lads, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and The Likely Lads film played by Bingley born actor Rodney Bewes. He is single in The Likely Lads, marries Thelma Chambers in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and is still married to her in the film. He works as an electrician and later as a civil engineer. Bob is a long-term friend of Terry Collier.

Early life

Bob was conceived in Scarborough (hence his middle name) by unmarried parents, the day before his father was posted to Catterick by the British Army. Bob was born on 22 February 1944 into a working-class family. Once he started school, he proved to be an impressionable child, on his own being conscientious, but being easily coaxed into trouble by friends, particularly Terry. At an early age Bob and Terry got into mild trouble, stealing Dinky toys and a hosepipe from Woolworths. Bob left school to become an electrical apprentice with Ellisons Electrical. While serving his apprenticeship, he also attended night school, eventually becoming a qualified electrician. In the last episode of the Likely Lads, he signed up for the British Army, but was discharged for having flat feet. Terry, who had signed up to be with Bob, was accepted and went to serve in West Germany.

The Likely Lads

The Likely Lads is an English sitcom created and written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, and produced by Dick Clement. Twenty episodes were broadcast by the BBC, in three series, between 16 December 1964 and 23 July 1966. However, only eight of these shows have survived. The sitcom was set in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England.

This show was followed by a popular sequel series, in colour, entitled Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, broadcast between 9 January 1973 and 24 December 1974. This was followed in 1976 by a spin-off feature film The Likely Lads.

Some episodes of both the original black and white series and the colour sequel were adapted for radio, with the original television cast.

Premise

The original show followed the friendship of two working class young men, Terry Collier (James Bolam) and Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes), in Newcastle upon Tyne in the mid 1960s. Both Bob and Terry are assumed to be in their early 20s (when their ages are revealed in the later film, this puts both characters at around 20 when the series started).
