Blood Bowl

Blood Bowl is a fantasy football game created by Jervis Johnson for the British games company Games Workshop as a parody of American Football. The game was first released in 1987 and has been re-released in new editions since. Blood Bowl is set in an alternate version of the Warhammer Fantasy setting, populated by traditional fantasy elements such as human warriors, goblins, dwarves, elves, orcs and trolls.

The most recent purchasable edition of the game contains a printed copy of Living Rulebook 1.0. However, the most up-to-date version of the game's rules is the Competition Rules Pack, or CRP. This is no longer available from Games Workshop's website, but can be found on thenaf.net, which is the global fan organisation for Blood Bowl.

Gameplay

Blood Bowl is a two-player, turn-based board game that typically uses 28 mm miniatures to represent a contest between two teams on a playing field. A board containing a grid overlay represents the field. Using dice, cards, and counters, the players attempt to score higher than each other by entering the opponent's end zone with a player who possesses the ball.

Blood Bowl 2

Blood Bowl 2 is a turn-based fantasy sports video game developed by Cyanide Studios and published by Focus Home Interactive. It is a sequel to the 2009 video game Blood Bowl, based on the board game by Games Workshop. The game was developed for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and was released on 22 September 2015.

The game uses a new engine and removes the real-time mode found in the previous game, being turn-based only. It also introduces the Bretonnian as a new playable race, which was developed based on a fan-developed rulebook. The game will feature both a solo campaign and a multiplayer mode, with the solo campaign being played as the human team, the Reikland Reavers. Initially eight teams are playable, but additional teams were available as preorder bonus and DLC.

Races

Eight races are included in the Blood Bowl 2 base game. These are the Humans, Orcs, Dwarfs, Skaven, High Elves, Dark Elves, Chaos, and Bretonnians. There are also two races that are obtained as a pre-order bonus. The Wood Elves can be obtained by pre-ordering the game for Xbox One, and the Lizardmen can be obtained by pre-ordering the game for the PlayStation 4. When pre-ordering through Steam, both races are obtained.

Blood Bowl (1995 video game)

Blood Bowl is the turn-based strategy video game adaptation of the popular Games Workshop miniatures game, originally developed for MS-DOS computers by MicroLeague.

Gameplay

The game is a fantasy version of American football, with a violent twist in that opponents can be deliberately seriously injured or killed, and without the ability to kick field goals. Each player is given a set number of action points with which to act. The team that scores the most touchdowns wins. This can be achieved through a throwing and passing game, or alternatively, by beating the opposing team up so badly that scoring becomes easy.

The game features league play in which the player's team competes in the standings and can sign free agents to augment his team or replace killed players.

Reception

The game was reviewed in 1995 in Dragon #220 by Paul Murphy in the "Eye of the Monitor" column. Murphy calls the game "a disappointment," then goes on to suggest that readers should "play the board-game: it's better."
