Blinker the Star

Blinker the Star is a Canadian indie rock band, originally from Pembroke, Ontario, Canada. Band leader Jordon Zadorozny is known for having cowritten songs with Courtney Love. Other notable musicians that have appeared on Blinker the Star albums include one of Jordon's childhood heroes Lindsey Buckingham, Leland Sklar, Ken Andrews, and many others.

History

After their first release, they moved to Montreal. On the strength of favourable reviews for their self-titled independent debut in 1993, which featured complex, hard guitar pounding riffs mixed with softer, melancholy based tracks, the band released two albums on major labels in the United States, and was widely promoted as a potential "next big thing" in alternative rock. However, the genre's commercial appeal was already beginning to fade when the band's major label debut, A Bourgeois Kitten, was released in 1996. Consequently, commercial success never materialized for the band. However, songs from the 1999 release August Everywhere, particularly "Below the Sliding Doors", enjoyed considerable airplay on Canadian radio stations such as 102.1 The Edge; the album was number 89 on The Edge's top 102 albums of 1999. After being dropped from DreamWorks Records, the band re-emerged in 2003 with Still in Rome. Following this release, the band went on hiatus for nearly a decade, then returned with the album We Draw Lines in the spring of 2012.

The Star (Pakistan)

The Star was Pakistan's most widely read English Language evening newspaper. It was founded in 1953 in Karachi, Pakistan.

The Star was published as part of the Dawn Group of newspapers by Pakistan Herald Publications (Pvt.) Limited (PHPL). Although no longer in print, the paper focused on controversial, current issues and gained a reputation for being outspoken and hard-hitting. The last editor of the paper was Kamal Majidulla. The newspaper was usually printed by 1:30pm, and available by about 2:30pm.

The newspaper published a supplement on weekends, called Star Weekend, which provided details on festivals, exhibitions and the cultural and entertainment scene in Pakistan. It also contained focus reports that targeted affluent Pakistani consumers. The editor of this supplement was Asif Noorani. Imran Aslam, now President of Geo TV, served as an editor for The Star.

The Pakistan Herald Publications (Pvt.) in addition to The Star, also publishes Dawn (the first newspaper to be published in Pakistan and the most widely circulated), Herald (a monthly current affairs magazine), Spider (a monthly Internet magazine) and Aurora (a marketing and advertising based bi-monthly magazine).

The Star (South Africa)

The Star is a daily newspaper based in Gauteng, South Africa. It is one of the titles under the Independent News & Media South Africa group recently acquired by Sekunjalo Media Consortium led by founder and chairman Dr Iqbal Survé. It was previously owned by Independent News & Media. The newspaper employed three members of the Bang-Bang Club. It employed Kevin Carter as a staff photographer in 1984.Ken Oosterbroek worked for the paper before being appointed its chief photographer in August 1991. He hired Joao Silva shortly afterwards.

History

The Star newspaper appeared for the first time in Johannesburg as The Eastern Star. It was founded in Grahamstown under that title on 6 January 1871 (as a resurrection of the previous Great Eastern paper), and was moved to the Witwatersrand sixteen years later by its owners, brothers Thomas and George Sheffield. In 1889, the name Eastern Star was changed to the one currently in use.
