Black River (Ohio)

The Black River is a tributary of Lake Erie, about 12 mi (19 km) long, in northern Ohio in the United States. Via Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, it is part of the watershed of the St. Lawrence River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean. The Black drains an area of 470 mi² (1217 km²).

According to the Geographic Names Information System, the Black River was formerly named "Canesadooharie River" and "Riviere en Grys." (These two historical names were actually originally intended to refer to nearby rivers, instead of the Black River.)

Course

The Black River is formed in the city of Elyria by the confluence of its east and west branches:

  • The East Branch Black River is formed in northwestern Medina County by the confluence of two short tributaries, the East Fork Black River and the West Fork East Branch Black River. The East Fork flows southwardly past Lodi before turning northwestwardly, and the West Fork rises in northeastern Ashland County and flows generally eastwardly into Medina County; the two join about 1 mi (2 km) northwest of Lodi, and the East Branch then flows generally northwardly into Lorain County, past Grafton. It drains an area of 222 mi² (575 km²).
  • Black River (North Carolina)

The Black River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River, approximately 50 mi (80 km) long, in southeastern North Carolina in the United States.

It is formed in southern Sampson County, approximately 15 mi. (24 km) south of Clinton, by confluence of two creeks: Great Coharie and Six Runs. It flows SSE, receiving the South River approximately 30 mi (48 km) south of Clinton. It flows southeast through Pender County, past the Moores Creek National Battlefield, and joins the Cape Fear approximately 10 mi (16 km) northwest of Wilmington, near the broadening of the Cape Fear into a tidal estuary.

The river is known for having a wide variety of fish species, ranging from several types of sunfish and catfish, as well as largemouth bass.

    Watershed

The watershed is 375 square kilometres (145 sq mi) in area and the mean flow reported at the community of Sutton, which encompassed 324 square kilometres (125 sq mi) of the watershed, was 2.61 cubic metres (92.17 cu ft) (max flow 3.58 cubic metres or 126.43 cubic feet; min flow 1.76 cubic metres or 62.15 cubic feet). Course

The river begins at an unnamed lake on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Whitchurch–Stouffville, York Region, near the community of Cedar Valley. It heads northwest, under the Canadian National Railway main line, and then north into East Gwillimbury, then flows northeast under Ontario Highway 48 to cross the northwestern corner of Uxbridge, Durham Region. It flows under the former Lake Simcoe Railway branch of the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, before returning to Georgina in York Region. It heads north, passes over the Baldwin Dam at the community of Baldwin, flows through the community of Sutton, and reaches its mouth at Lake Simcoe between the communities of Briars Park to the west and Mossington Park to the east. Lake Simcoe flows via Lake Couchiching and the Severn River to Lake Huron.

    Black River (Cape Town)

The Black River is a river in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a tributary of the Salt River together with the Liesbeeck River and the Elsieskraal River. It rises in Arderne Gardens and flows underground initially beneath Main Road and the railway line, before continuing as a canal through Claremont and Rondebosch, then uncanalised through Mowbray, Observatory and Maitland after which it joins the Salt River. Its catchment is part of the Central Management Area of the City of Cape Town and the city has canalised 55% of the river.

  • United Freedom Front

The United Freedom Front (UFF) was a small American Marxist organization active in the 1970s and 1980s. It was originally called the Sam Melville/Jonathan Jackson Unit, and its members became known as the Ohio 7 when they were brought to trial. Between 1975 and 1984 the UFF carried out at least 20 bombings and nine bank robberies in the northeastern United States, targeting corporate buildings, courthouses, and military facilities. Brent L. Smith describes them as "undoubtedly the most successful of the leftist terrorists of the 1970s and 1980s." The group's members were eventually apprehended and convicted of conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, and other charges. Two, Tom Manning and Jaan Laaman, remain incarcerated today.

    Activities

The group was founded in 1975 as the Sam Melville/Jonathan Jackson Unit, setting off a bomb at the Massachusetts State House under that name, but changed its name to the United Freedom Front the same year. The initial members were Raymond Luc Levasseur (the UFF's leader), Tom Manning, and their respective spouses, Patricia Gros and Carole Manning. Levasseur and Tom Manning were both Vietnam War veterans and ex-convicts. The four had worked together in prison reform groups before forming the UFF. Four other members joined the group in the following years: Jaan Laaman and Barbara Curzi (another married couple), Kazi Toure (born Christopher King), and Richard Williams.
