Bizarre (album)

Bizarre is the tenth and final album by the Los Angeles, California-based R&B group The Sylvers. Released in 1984, the album was primarally produced by Leon Sylvers III along with Foster Sylvers and James Sylvers. This was their only album for Geffen Records.

Album

Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, then from 1948 as vinyl LP records played at 33 ¹⁄₃ rpm. Vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century albums sales have mostly focused on compact disc (CD) and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used in the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl.

An album may be recorded in a recording studio (fixed or mobile), in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to several years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately, and then brought or "mixed" together. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed "live", even when done in a studio. Studios are built to absorb sound, eliminating reverberation, so as to assist in mixing different takes; other locations, such as concert venues and some "live rooms", allow for reverberation, which creates a "live" sound. The majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at separate times while listening to the other parts using headphones; with each part recorded as a separate track.

Bizarre was a British alternative magazine published from 1997 to 2015. It is published by Dennis Publishing, and is a sister publication to the Fortean Times.

History

Bizarre was launched as a bimonthly title by John Brown Publishing in February 1997 and was edited by Fiona Jerome. It was an immediate success and changed to monthly issuance a year after its launch. Circulation peaked at more than 120,000 in 2000, but later the same year declined to less than 30,000 when I Feel Good (IFG) bought the magazine for £5 million. IFG was a company founded by James Brown, the former editor of Loaded magazine. When IFG collapsed, Dennis Publishing acquired Bizarre. The current editor of Bizarre is David McComb.Bizarre announced the end of publication in early 2015, with the January issue, published on 20 January, being its last.

Content

Bizarre covers alternative culture through interviews with counterculture personages, and articles about LGBT culture and drug, fetish, and other subcultures. It also reviews the work of avant-garde directors, musicians, authors, and visual artists—and of those who have a cult following.

Bizarre Creations

Bizarre Creations was a British video game development studio based in Liverpool, best known for their racing titles: Metropolis Street Racer (Dreamcast) and the followup Project Gotham Racing series (Xbox, Xbox 360). The company has also developed games in other genres, including the Geometry Wars arcade series, plus third-person shooters Fur Fighters and The Club. Bizarre Creations was acquired by publisher Activision in 2007, and subsequently completed its racer Blur in May 2010.

On 20 January 2011, Activision announced Bizarre Creations would close, and later confirmed the date. Bizarre marked the closure by releasing a retrospective video of its life's work.

History

Bizarre Creations started as Raising Hell Software, founded by Martyn Chudley. Sega scorned "Hell", and the company went nameless for a short time. In 1994, a pending submission to Psygnosis/Sony forced the decision of a new name. The founder tentatively left "Weird Concepts" on the submission documentation. Then a staff member used Microsoft Word's thesaurus, and "Bizarre Creations" stuck.

Bizarre (film)

Bizarre is a 2015 French drama film directed by Etienne Faure. It was screened in the Panorama section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. In June and August 2015, Bizarre was screened at The Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival 2015.
