Bishnupur, Bankura

Bishnupur is a town and a municipality in Bankura District in the state of West Bengal, India. It is famous for its terracotta temples and the balucheri sarees.

History

Bishnupur was ruled under the Gupta period by local Hindu kings who paid tribute to Samudra Gupta. Following a long period of obscurity, where the land oscillated between being a minor independent principality and a vassal state. The land is also called Mallabhum after the Malla rulers of this place. The Malla rulers were Vaishnavites and built the famous terracotta temples during the 17th and 18th century at this place. The terracotta temples here are the best specimen of the classical style of Bengal architecture. The legends of Bipodtarini Devi are associated with Malla Kings of Bishnupur.

Bishnupur (the distance from Kolkata is 132 km), now the headquarters of the subdivision of the same name in Bankura district, is a seat of crafts and culture.

For almost a thousand years it was the capital of the Malla kings of Mallabhum, of which Bankura was a part, till their power waned during the times when Mughal Empire weakened under the last monarchs of the dynasty.

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 255 Bishnupur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is composed of the following: Bishnupur municipality; Bishnupur community development block; and Amdangra, Saltora and Satmauli gram panchayats of Taldangra community development block.

Bishnupur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No. 37 Bishnupur (Lok Sabha constituency).

1977-2006

In the 2006 state assembly elections, Swapan Ghosh of CPI(M) won the Bishnupur seat defeating his nearest rival Subhasis Batabayal of Trinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Jayanta Chowdhury of CPI(M) defeated Subhasis Batabayal of Trinamool Congress in 2001 and Buddhadeb Mukherjee of Congress in 1996. Achintya Krishna Ray of CPI(M) defeated Subhasis Batabayal of Congress in 1991, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee of Congress in 1987, Sabyasachi Roy of Congress in 1982 and Ardhendu Mitra of Congress in 1977.

Bishnupur (community development block) (also spelled Vishnupur) is an administrative division in Bishnupur subdivision of Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Bishnupur police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Bishnupur.

Bankura

Bankura (pron: bænˈkʊərə) is a city and a municipality in Bankura District in the state of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of Bankura District.

Etymology

In the Mahabharata, Bankura was described as Suhmobhumi. The word Larh or Rarh (in Nagari: rāḍh) was introduced after 6th century A.D. It comes from the old Austric word ráŕhá or ráŕho which means “land of red soil”. In ancient times "China called Ráŕh by the name of 'Láti'". In Santali, lar means thread, rarh means tune and larh means snake. Perhaps the Jain and Greek scholars used this original Austric word Larh to indicate this dry forest region which was very difficult. The popularity of Manasa Puja, the worship of Snake-Goddess Manasa, shows this opinion might have some relevance. According to Nilkantha, a famous commentator of the Mahabharata, the words suhmo[bhumi] (Sanskrit: suhma-bhūmi) and Rarh are synonymous.

Scholars differs in their opinion about the etymology of the name Bankura. In the words of the Kol-Mundas, orah or rah means habitation. Many places of Rarh have an added rah at the end of their names. One of the most influential gods of the district Dharmathakur is called Bankura Roy. The name of the district may come from his name. Linguist Suniti Kumar Chatterjee thinks that the name came from the word banka (zig-zag), and its word-corruption banku, which means extremely beautiful, and he who must be worshiped. In 1979, the word “Bancoorah” was found in the map of Renal. In 1863, Gastrel referred this region as Bancoonda.

In 2012, a by-election was necessitated by the death of sitting Trinamool Congress MLA Kashinath Misra . Minati Misra of Trinamool Congress defeated her nearest rival Nilanjan Dasgupta of CPI(M) by 15,138 votes.
