Bill Hicks

William Melvin Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician. His material, encompassing a wide range of social issues including religion, politics, and philosophy, was controversial, and often steeped in dark comedy. He criticized consumerism, superficiality and banality within the media and popular culture, which he characterized as oppressive tools of the ruling class that keep people "stupid and apathetic".

At the age of 16, while still in high school, he began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas. During the 1980s, he toured the United States extensively and made a number of high-profile television appearances; but it was in the UK that he amassed a significant fan base, filling large venues during his 1991 tour. He also achieved a modicum of recognition as a guitarist and songwriter.

Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on February 26, 1994 in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 32. In subsequent years his work gained a significant measure of acclaim in creative circles—particularly after a series of posthumous album releases—and he developed a substantial cult following. In 2007 he was voted sixth on Britain's Channel 4 list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comics, and rose to number four on the 2010 list.

Billy Hicks (sport shooter)

Billy G. Hicks (born 1927) is an expert moving target shooter, and distinguished himself in high speed moving target competitions around the world and the United States from 1965-1981.

He began shooting trap and skeet in 1961, and by 1965 was training on Olympic trap ranges. Olympic trap targets travel out of the bunker at 90 miles per hour, versus the 50 mile per hour rate of standard trap and skeet. He became a member of the United States World Championship Trap and Skeet Team in 1966. His hit ratio on Olympic moving trap and skeet targets was 98.8%, and he was considered to be one of the United States Marine Corps' best Olympic clay target shooters.

In 1966 his team won gold for their country at the Olympic trap World Championships in Wiesbaden, Germany. The team consisted of Billy Hicks, Gordon Horner, Charles Jenson, and Ken Jones. This is also the event where he earned the highest award to be given to any United States shooter, the U.S. International Distinguished Shooter Badge (his number is #100).
