Bill Young

Charles William "Bill" Young (December 16, 1930 – October 18, 2013) was an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 2013. A Republican from Florida, Young served as chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations from 1999 to 2005. He was the longest-serving Republican member of Congress at the time of his death.

Early life, education, and early career

Young was born in Harmarville, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, in 1930. He had Irish, German, and Swiss ancestry. He grew up in a Pennsylvania coal town in a shotgun shack. His father abandoned the family and a flood washed away their home at age 6. An uncle had a hunting camp in Florida, so the family moved there when he was 16. Young dropped out of St. Petersburg High School to support his ill mother, Wilma M. (Hulings) Young, and was wounded in a hunting accident. He married Marian Ford on August 20, 1949, when he was an 18-year-old high school dropout and she was 17, entering her senior year at St. Petersburg High School. When he was 18, he joined the Army National Guard and served from 1948 to 1957. After finishing his service, he applied for a job as an insurance salesman and ultimately ran an insurance agency.

Bill Young (offensive lineman)

William A. Young, Jr (May 20, 1914 – January 21, 1994) was an American football offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins. He was also head coach of Furman University.

Early life

Young was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas and attended North Little Rock High School.

College career

Young attended and played college football at the University of Alabama. As a sophomore in 1934, he helped the Crimson Tide finish the season with a perfect record (10–0 overall, 7–0 in the SEC), as Southeastern Conference champions for the second consecutive season and as national champions after they defeated Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Alabama was selected national champion in 1934 by Dunkel, Houlgate, Poling System and Williamson. Sportswriter Morgan Blake called it the best football team he ever saw.

Professional career

After going undrafted in 1937, Young was signed by the Washington Redskins. During his rookie season, the Redskins won their first league championship, the 1937 NFL Championship Game, on December 12, 1937, against the Chicago Bears, their first year in D.C. The Redskins then met the Bears again in the 1940 NFL Championship Game on December 8, 1940. The result, 73–0 in favor of the Bears, is still the worst one-sided loss in NFL history. Young then played in his third championship game, the 1942 NFL Championship on December 13, 1942, where the Redskins won their second championship, 14–6.

Bill Young (rugby union)

Bill Young (born 4 March 1974, in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian former rugby union footballer. He played rugby for the Brumbies in the international Super Rugby competition and played for Australia over 40 times. Standing at 1.88m and weighing in at 115kg, Young is a loosehead prop. He was educated at St Joseph's College

Young represented Australia in the under-21s in 1995.Young made his Super 12 debut for the Brumbies in a match against the Wellington Hurricanes in a home match in Canberra in mid-season 1998. He scored his first Super Rugby try in the 2000 season, against New South Wales team, the Waratahs. That same year Young made his debut for the Wallabies in a test against France in Paris.

The following season he played in 12 matches for the Brumbies, scoring two tries. The Brumbies made it to the semi-finals. The following year however he played nine tests for the Wallabies that year. Young was part of the Australian 2003 Rugby World Cup team that made it to the final in Sydney, though the Wallabies were defeated by the English in the final.

Bill Young (New Zealand politician)

William "Bill" Lambert Young CMG (13 November 1913 – 14 July 2009) was a New Zealand politician representing the National Party.

Biography

Young was born in Kawakawa in 1913, the son of James Young. He attended Ngawha Native School (27 kilometres or 17 miles from Kawakawa) where his parents were teachers, and then Wellington College.

During World War II Young served with the 2nd New Zealand Division in North Africa, and was invalided home after the workshop section in Egypt was bombed. He worked for Murray Roberts Company Limited before and after the war (1930–1946), then music retailer Beggs (1946–1956), and was general manager of manufacturer/retailer Radio Corporation of New Zealand (1956–1966).

He was a Member of Parliament for the National Party from 1966 to 1981 representing the marginal Miramar electorate in Wellington. He stood unsuccessfully in 1963, but won the electorate in 1966 with a majority of 146. From 1975 to 1981 he served in the Third National Government as Minister of Works. Young was active with the New Zealand Automobile Association and was vice-president of the Wellington AA, and a member of the council of the North Island AA.

Bill Young (Tasmanian politician)

Aretas William Overton "Bill" Young MBE (9 February 1917 – 19 November 2003) was an Australian politician.

He was born in North Adelaide, South Australia. In 1959 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as a Liberal member for Franklin. He held the seat until 1969, when he was defeated. Young died in Hobart in 2003.
