Bill Yates

Floyd Buford Yates (July 5, 1921 – March 26, 2001), better known as Bill Yates, was a cartoonist who drew gag cartoons and comic strips before assuming the position of comic strip editor for King Features Syndicate in 1978.

Born in Samson, Alabama, Yates learned to cartoon by taking the W. L. Evans Correspondence Course, and his first sale was a five dollar first prize in The Open Road for Boys cartoon contest. He served as an aviator in the United States Navy during WWII, training fighter pilots in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he married Jessie Jean ("Skippy") Hardy. As a journalism student at the University of Texas, he edited the campus humor magazine, The Texas Ranger.

Forever funny

Moving to New York in 1950, he edited Dell Publishing's cartoon magazines (1000 Jokes, Ballyhoo, For Laughing Out Loud) and Dell's paperback cartoon collections, such as Forever Funny (1956). His comic strip about an absent-minded professor, Professor Phumble, was carried by King Features from 1960 to 1978. In addition to work on Little Iodine, Yates also did the strip Benjy with Jim Berry from 1973 to 1975. In addition to work in advertising and twice-weekly editorial cartoons for the Westport News in Connecticut, Yates also illustrated books and comic books, such as Charlton's Ronald McDonald (1970–71).

Bill Yates (footballer)

William "Bill" Yates (20 March 1903 – 13 October 1978) was an English footballer and cricketer.

Born in Little Lever, a village near Bolton, Lancashire, Yates played professional football as a goalkeeper for Bolton Wanderers and Watford in the Football League, and also represented non-league side Northfleet United. As a cricketer, he was a leg break bowler and wicket-keeper who played Minor counties cricket for Buckinghamshire. He died in Slough at the age of 75.

Football career

A goalkeeper, Yates played for his village team, Little Lever St Matthew's, before joining Football League club Bolton Wanderers. Mainly used as an understudy to first-choice custodian Dick Pym, he made six appearances in the First Division during the 1925–26 season. Yates joined Third Division South side Watford in October 1926, and played in all of the club's remaining fixtures in the 1926–27 season. He remained at Watford for a further two seasons, but was largely a reserve player. Yates left Watford in June 1929, having played 47 league games, and a further two matches in the FA Cup. He subsequently played for Northfleet United.

William Yates (politician)

William Yates (15 September 1921 – 18 April 2010) was a British Conservative politician and later an Australian Liberal politician. He was one of several to have served in both the UK and Australian parliaments.

Early life

William Yates was born in 1921, son of William Yates and Mrs John T. Renshaw of Appleby, Westmorland and educated at Uppingham School and Hertford College, Oxford.

Military Service

He entered the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) early in 1942 during the Second World War, and served through the war in North Africa and Italy, gaining rank of Captain in 1946. He lost a leg at the knee at the First Battle of El Alamein and became one of the first soldiers given penicillin. He postwar served with the Territorial Army attached to the Warwickshire Yeomanry in 1950, and in the Shropshire Yeomanry from 1956 to 1967.

Diplomatic and Political Career

Yates served in the Foreign Office in the Middle East, working in military intelligence in the Suez Canal Zone. He lived briefly in Lebanon.
