Bill English

Simon William "Bill" English (born 30 December 1961) is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of New Zealand, in office since 2008.

English entered parliament in 1990 as a National Party MP representing the Wallace electorate. In 1999 English served as Minister of Finance for a brief period until National, under the leadership of Jenny Shipley at the time, lost the election later that year. In October 2001 he replaced Shipley as the leader of the National Party, but after a disastrous result in the 2002 election he was replaced as the leader by Don Brash in October 2003. After Don Brash's resignation in November 2006 he became deputy leader of the party under John Key, becoming the Deputy Prime Minister after a November 2008 election victory. English retired as an electorate MP at the 2014 general election and became a list-only MP.

Early life

English was born in the small Southland town of Lumsden. He attended St. Patrick's College, Silverstream in Wellington as a boarder and became Head Boy. He later gained degrees in commerce (at the University of Otago, where he was a resident at Selwyn College) and in English literature (at Victoria University of Wellington). After completing his university studies, he went to Dipton to work as a farmer. In 1987 he returned to Wellington to work as a policy analyst in the New Zealand Treasury, returning to Dipton two years later.

Bill English (computer engineer)

William "Bill" K. English is a computer engineer who contributed to the development of the computer mouse while working for Douglas Engelbart at SRI International's Augmentation Research Center. He would later work for Xerox PARC and Sun Microsystems.

Career

English joined SRI in the 1960s to work on magnetic drives, and built one of the first all-magnetic arithmetic units with Hewitt Crane. In 1964, he was the first person to join Douglas Engelbart's lab, the Augmentation Research Center.

He and Douglas Engelbart share credit for creating possibly the earliest computer mouse in 1963; English built the initial prototype, and was its first user, based on Engelbart's notes. English led a 1965 project, sponsored by NASA, which evaluated the best way to select a point on a computer display; the mouse was the winner. English was also instrumental at The Mother of All Demos in 1968, which showcased the mouse and other technologies developed as part of their NLS (oN-Line System). In particular, English figured out how to connect a terminal in the San Francisco Civic Auditorium to the host computer at SRI, and also transmitted audio and video between the locations.

Bill English (actor)

Bill English (born William Andrew English; April 8, 1980 Rochester, New York), an American actor. He is best known as playing the role of "Joel" in the ABC television series Cavemen.

Personal

English was raised Honeoye Falls, New York, a small village outside of Rochester, New York.

He is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Career

English achieved national attention for his comedic work in two major national TV commercial campaigns, for Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch and T-Mobile. In the advertisements for Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch he plays "Johnson," an oblivious, cereal-munching office worker who infuriates his boss ("Smith", played by Brennan Brown). In the first spot created for T-Mobile, entitled "Secret Lovers," he plays a duped boyfriend furious that his best friend has been bumped up to one of his girlfriend's "myFaves" favorite five callers.

English has performed on Broadway with Anne Heche and Alec Baldwin in 20th Century. In February 2012, he took over the lead role of Billy Crocker in the 2011 revival of Anything Goes.
