Bill Carr

William ("Bill") Arthur Carr (October 24, 1909 – January 14, 1966) was an American athlete, a double Olympic champion in 1932.

Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Carr studied at Mercersburg Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, where he was coached by 1904 Olympian Lawson Robertson. Carr's favorite events were the 440-yard dash (or 400 m), the 880 y and the long jump, but he had never managed to win a major race until 1932. At the IC4A championships of that year, he caused an enormous upset by beating world record holder Ben Eastman in the 440 y. He repeated this feat some weeks later at the Olympic Trials.

Now Carr was a favorite for the 400 m gold at the 1932 Summer Olympics, which were held in Los Angeles. He cruised through the heats, as did Eastman. In the final, Eastman led for most of the race, but with less than 100 m to go, Carr pulled up next to the Stanford athlete, and sprinted to victory in 46.2 seconds, a new world record, with Eastman taking the silver.

Carr won another gold medal as a member of the American 4 × 400 m relay team; he substituted for Arnold Adams, who had been named to the team but withdrew due to an injury. Though Eastman was not on the team, the United States won easily, setting a new world record as well (3:08.2).

Bill Carr (American football)

William Curtis Carr, III (born November 29, 1945) is an American former college football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He played college football for the University of Florida, and was recognized as an All-American. He later served as the athletic director at the University of Florida and the University of Houston. Carr now works as a college sports consultant.

Early life

Carr was born in Gainesville, Florida, the son of a Baptist minister. He grew up in Vero Beach and Pensacola, Florida. Carr attended Pensacola High School, and was a standout high school football player for the Pensacola Tigers. Following his senior season, he was recognized as a first-team all-state selection.

College years

Carr accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he was the center for coach Ray Graves' Florida Gators football team from 1964 to 1966. Carr was the roommate of the Gators' Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Steve Spurrier before Spurrier's marriage in September 1966, and was a team captain his senior year. He was named a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection and a first-team All-American in 1966. Carr and the Gators concluded the 1966 season with a 27–12 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the 1967 Orange Bowl.

Bill Carr (politician)

William Compton Carr (10 July 1918 – December 2000) was a British solicitor and Conservative Party politician.

Educated at the Leys School, Cambridge, he became a solicitor.

Political career

Active in Conservative politics, he became a member of the London County Council in October 1956 when he was selected to fill an aldermanic vacancy, having failed to be elected to the council in the previous year. His term of office expired in 1958, but he returned to the council in 1961, and remained a member until its abolition in 1965.

In the 1959 landslide election, Carr was elected member of parliament (MP) for the seat of Barons Court in west London overturning a small Labour Party majority of 125 to win the seat by 913 votes. He served until the 1964 general election, when Labour regained the seat.

Imprisonment and bankruptcy

Following his exit from parliament, it emerged that Carr had been amassing a serious debt while an MP. In 1971 he was found guilty of fraud in the Central Criminal Court, and was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. He admitted to having converted nearly £20,000 of his clients' funds to his own use, some of which he used to buy out his partner's share in his legal practice, and part of which he used to pay off "a man who knew something about me which I did not want disclosed". He was struck off the roll of solicitors in the following year. Following his release from prison he was adjudged bankrupt in March 1974 with debts of £97,515 and assets of only £151.

Bill Carr (coach)

William Eddy "Bill" Carr (March 26, 1917 – April 2, 2006) was an American football coach in the United States.

Coaching career

Carr was the head college football coach for the Alma Scots located in Alma, Michigan. He held that position for the 1963 and 1964 seasons. His coaching record at Alma was four wins and thirteen losses, as of the conclusion of the 2010 season, this ranks him #16 at Alma in total wins and #26 at the school in winning percentage (.235).

Bill Carr is a Canadian stage and screen actor. He is remembered for his role as Possum Lodge cook and wannabe actor and singer Eddie Johnson on the second season of The Red Green Show. as well as numerous live performances. Carr is also known for his work with the CBC's The Journal and Midday and received two Atlantic Journalism awards for his satirical commentaries.

Early life

Carr was born in Nova Scotia and raised on Prince Edward Island, graduating from Colonel Gray High School. He went on to Acadia University where he studied English and Theatre. While at Acadia, he met Evelyn Garbary, who offered him a role as the lead in Hamlet.

In addition to his studies in theatre, Carr studied Philosophy and English followed years later by work towards his Masters of Theology at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax.

Career

Carr's thirty-five-year career has seen him perform on stages across Canada, most notably in Nova Scotia at Neptune Theatre, Mermaid Theatre and the Atlantic Theatre Festival. He has written and performed in radio dramas for CBC and has made appearances in television programs, movies and advertisements. In the 1980s, Carr performed regularly in the comedy review "Ole Charlie Farquharson's Testament and Magic Lantern Show" created by Donald Harron and Frank Peppiatt.
