Biela (crater)

Biela is a lunar impact crater that is located in the rugged highlands of the southeastern Moon. The crater lies to the east of Rosenberger, to the southeast of the Watt–Steinheil double crater.

The rim of this crater is overlaid by a pair of small but notable craters: Biela C across the northeast rim and Biela W along the western inner wall. The satellite crater Biela B is attached to the southwestern outer rim, and ejecta from Biela covers the northwestern part of the interior. Despite a certain degree of wear, the rim of Biela remains relatively well-defined, especially in the southeast.

The interior floor is flat and not marked by any craterlets of note. There is a central peak formation of three ridges located just to the northeast of the midpoint.

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Biela.

Thomas Hector Schofield, nicknamed Hex, is a fictional character played by Philip Olivier in a series of audio plays produced by Big Finish Productions based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. A staff nurse working for St. Gart's Hospital in London in the year 2021, he is a companion of the Seventh Doctor.

Biography

Hex first appeared in the play The Harvest (2004), where he met the Doctor and Ace while the two were investigating signs of alien activity at St. Gart's. Ace was going by her real name of McShane and working in Human Resources, striking up a conversation with Hex to gain information on the mysterious C-programme. When Hex gave Ace a ride to her "lodgings" in Shoreditch, he spied her going into a police box at Totter's Lane. Since Hex was hammering on the door and demanding to know what was going on, Ace let him inside the TARDIS, and Hex's world was transformed forever.

Hex aided the Doctor and Ace in their investigations at St. Gart's, uncovering the latest invasion scheme of the Cybermen and helping the time travellers defeat their old foes. At the adventure's conclusion, Hex asked if he could accompany them in their travels. The Doctor accepted him as his newest companion.

Hex (climbing)

A hex is an item of rock climbing equipment used to protect climbers from injury during a fall. They are intended to be wedged into a crack or other opening in the rock, and do not require a hammer to place. They were developed as an alternative to pitons, which are hammered into cracks and are more prone to damage the rock. Most commonly, a carabiner will be used to join the hex to the climbing rope by means of a loop of webbing, cord or a cable which is part of the hex.

Hexes are a type of nut, a hollow eccentric hexagonal prism with tapered ends, usually threaded with webbing, a swaged cable, or a cord. They are manufactured by several firms, with a range of sizes varying from about 10–100 millimetres (0.4–4 in) wide. Climbers select a range of sizes to use on a specific climb based on the characteristics of the cracks in the rock encountered on that particular climb. Sides may be straight or curved although the functioning principles remain the same no matter which shape is selected; the lack of sharp corners on curved models may make them easier to remove from the rock.
