Beverly Hills, California

Beverly Hills is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, surrounded by the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood. Originally a Spanish ranch where lima beans were grown, Beverly Hills was incorporated in 1914 by a group of investors who had failed to find oil, but found water instead and eventually decided to develop it into a town. By 2013, its population had grown to 34,658. Sometimes referred to as "90210", one of its primary ZIP codes, it is home to many actors and celebrities. The city includes the Rodeo Drive shopping district and the Beverly Hills Oil Field.

History

Early history

Gaspar de Portolá arrived in the area that would become Beverly Hills on August 3, 1769, travelling along native trails which followed the present-day route of Wilshire Boulevard.

The area was settled by Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband in 1828. They called their 4,500 acres (18 km²) of property the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas. in 1854, she sold the ranch to Benjamin Davis Wilson (1811–1878) and Henry Hancock (1822–1883). By the 1880s, the ranch had been subdivided into parcels of 75 acres (0.30 km²) and was being rapidly bought up by anglos from Los Angeles and the East coast.

Beverly Hills (Pacific Electric)

Beverly Hills was a suburban line of the Pacific Electric Railway. It was opened in 1909 by the Pasadena and Pacific Railroad and taken over by the Pacific Electric in 1911. The route terminus switched over to the Subway Terminal Building in 1926.

The line was built and operated by the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad. On March 19, 1906, an agreement was reached to sell all the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad lines for $6 million to Henry Huntington’s Pacific Electric Railway.

Beverly Hills (born 23 March 1966) is a British actress who has played Kate Warren in Backup, Elaine Davies-Johnson in Brookside, Liz Walton in Accused, Monika Gaye in Peak Practice, Shirley Slipman in The Bill, Viv Kelly in Dalziel and Pascoe and she has also appeared in Casualty, Holby City, Silent Witness and Waking the Dead (TV series). She also played Postie in Bear Behaving Badly, and was briefly considered for the role of Sonya Chance in Little Britain before it was made a non-speaking role. Also, in the mid 1990s Beverly presented the BBC Schools programme; Storytime.

Beverly Hills (song)

"Beverly Hills" is a song by the American rock band Weezer. It is the first single from the band's fifth album, Make Believe. It was released on March 29, 2005. The music video for this song, directed by Marcos Siega, was filmed at the Playboy Mansion (which is actually not located in Beverly Hills, but the neighboring community of Holmby Hills), with Hugh Hefner making a cameo appearance at the beginning. The song features Stephanie Eitel of Agent Sparks on the chorus on backup vocals, performing the "Gimme, gimme" hook.

Rivers Cuomo's story behind "Beverly Hills": "I was at the opening of the new Hollywood Bowl and I flipped through the program and I saw a picture of Wilson Phillips. And for some reason I just thought how nice it would be to marry, like, an “established” celebrity and live in Beverly Hills and be part of that world. And it was a totally sincere desire. And then I wrote that song, Beverly Hills. For some reason, by the time it came out—and the video came out—it got twisted around into something that seemed sarcastic. But originally it wasn’t meant to be sarcastic at all."
