Berg Bay

Berg Bay (71°27′S 169°27′E / 71.450°S 169.450°E / -71.450; 169.450Coordinates: 71°27′S 169°27′E / 71.450°S 169.450°E / -71.450; 169.450) is a small bay between Birthday Point and Islands Point in the west side of Robertson Bay, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The bay was charted and named in 1911 by the Northern Party led by Victor Campbell of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910–13, because icebergs appear to gravitate there. Haffner Glacier, which flows into this bay adjacently, may also contribute to the large amount of icebergs or 'Bergy Bits' floating throughout the bay. Berg Bay lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

Berg, Germersheim

Berg is a municipality in the district of Germersheim, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is situated on the border with France. The Ortsteil Neulauterburg, 2 km west of the centre of Berg, is contiguous with the French town Lauterbourg, across the small river Lauter. Berg has a railway station on the regional line from Wörth am Rhein to Lauterbourg.

Berg, Thurgau

Berg is a municipality in the district of Weinfelden in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland.

History

The earliest traces of human settlement come from the Stone Age and there are scattered Bronze Age items around Berg. The modern village of Berg is first mentioned in 796 as Berga. In the Early Middle Ages, Berg and the surrounding land were in the possession of the Bishop of Constance and were on the southern border of the Bishop's land. A fortress was first built in the 12th-13th Century, which was replaced in 1600 by a castle. The castle and the rights to rule over the villages of Berg, Andhausen, Donzhausen and parts of Andwil (TG), Mauren and Mattwil were rented out by the Cathedral of Constance (not the Bishop) until 1798. The circumstances behind the removal of the diocese's administration and the emergence of the court in 1386 are unclear. Some of the owners of the village included Egli von Zug (1518–67), Brümsi von Herblingen (1586-1653/56) and the von Thurn-Valsassina family (1676–1798).

Berg, St. Gallen

Berg is a municipality in the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Rorschach in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

History

Berg is first mentioned in 796 as ad Berga. In 837 it was mentioned as in villa nominata Perc.

Geography

Berg has an area, as of 2006, of 3.8 km² (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 67.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 19.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 12.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.5%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes).

The municipality is located in the Rorschach Wahlkreis. The village is on the road between St. Gallen and Arbon and between Lake Constance and the hills that rise to the south and west of the lake. It consists of the villages of Ober and Unterberg since the Middle Ages.

Demographics

Berg has a population (as of 31 December 2014) of 832.As of 2007, about 10.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Of the foreign population, (as of 2000), 19 are from Germany, 8 are from Italy, 13 are from ex-Yugoslavia, 18 are from Austria, 4 are from Turkey, and 26 are from another country. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 5.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (94.3%), with Portuguese being second most common ( 1.3%) and Serbo-Croatian being third ( 0.8%). Of the Swiss national languages (as of 2000), 798 speak German, 2 people speak French, 4 people speak Italian, and 3 people speak Romansh.

Bayé

Bayé is a town in the Solenzo Department of Banwa Province in western Burkina Faso. As of 2005 it had a population of 5,478.

Bay (chancellor)

Bay, also called Ramesse Khamenteru, (died 1192 BC) was an important Asiatic official in ancient Egypt, who rose to prominence and high office under Seti II Userkheperure Setepenre and later became an influential powerbroker in the closing stages of the 19th Dynasty. He was generally identified with Irsu (alt. Arsu, Iarsu, Yarsu) mentioned in the Great Harris Papyrus, although no contemporary source connects Bay with Irsu.

Bay's importance is emphasized by the fact that he was given permission, possibly by Seti but more probably by Siptah, to construct his own tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings (KV13). His tomb was clearly constructed as part of a triad of tombs, including that of the Pharaoh Siptah and Queen Twosret. This was an unprecedented privilege, the likes of which were rarely accorded to a commoner, let alone a foreigner (though previous exceptions, such as that of Yuya, have occurred). It is possible that Bay was accorded this tomb because he was a relation of Siptah's mother, a Canaanite concubine of Seti II, or perhaps even of Amenmesse. His tomb was later usurped under the Twentieth Dynasty by prince Mentuherkhepshef, a son of Ramesses IX.
