Benidorm

Benidorm (/ˈbɛnɪdɔːrm/; Valencian: [beniˈðɔɾm]; Spanish: [beniˈðor]) is a coastal City in the province of Alicante, Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea.

Until the 1960s, Benidorm was a small fishing village; today it is known for its hotel industry, beaches and skyscrapers. According to the 2014 census, Benidorm has a permanent population of 69,010 inhabitants, making it the fifth most populous town in the Alicante province. Benidorm has the most high-rise buildings per capita in the world.

History

It is thought there were settlements in the Benidorm area possibly as far back as 3000 BC, including evidence of Roman and Punic remains. However, settlements in the area were small and it was not until the arrival of the Moors (from whom the town derived its Arabic origin name) that the local population began to grow. The Christian King James I of Aragon reconquered the region in 1245 and Benidorm first officially became known in 1325, when Admiral Bernat de Sarrià of Polop awarded it a town charter as a way of removing the Moors and allowing Christians to inhabit the area.

Benidorm (Belgian TV series)

Benidorm is a comedy series developed and aired on the Belgian channel vtm between 1989 and 1992. 26 episodes were made. Most of the storylines are set in the Spanish town of Benidorm.

The series were written by Eddy Asselbergs. The first season is based upon Asselbergs theatre play "We gaan naar Benidorm" (We are heading to Benidorm). The second season is based upon on original script.

Story

Gaston and Angèle go on vacation to Blankenberge for several years. As they mostly have bad weather, Angèle decides they go abroad and chooses Benidorm as their next location. Gaston does not want to go, but is forged. She asks their neighbours Tuur and Germaine to join but they refuse. Once there it turns out their hotel is not yet finished. There is no electricity in the corridors, no elevator, no swimming pool, ... and the workers start at 6 AM . They make friends with their upper neighbours Theo and Mariette who bought their apartment.

Benidorm (TV series)

Benidorm is a British sitcom written by Derren Litten and produced by Tiger Aspect for ITV. The series features an ensemble cast of holiday makers and staff at the Solana all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm, Spain.

The show first aired on 1 February 2007. Critically acclaimed, Benidorm has received two National Television Awards and nominations at the British Comedy Awards and BAFTAs.

The seventh series began on ITV on 2 January 2015. A 7-episode eighth series was commissioned on 6 February 2015 which began airing on 11 January 2016.

Series 1 (2007)

Series 1 introduced the main characters, the Garvey family: parents Mick (Steve Pemberton) and Janice (Siobhan Finneran), teenage daughter Chantelle ('Telle' – Hannah Hobley) and seven-year-old son Michael (Oliver Stokes). They are on their first holiday abroad, paid for by Janice's mother – the sun-worshiping, chain-smoking Madge (Sheila Reid), who doesn't have a kind word for anyone. Jacqueline (Janine Duvitski) and Donald (Kenny Ireland) have been coming to Benidorm for twenty years and are enthusiastic, middle-aged swingers. Kate (Abigail Cruttenden) and Martin Weedon (Nicholas Burns) are going through a rough patch during their third year of marriage. Within seconds of arriving they realise that the Solana is the worst place for them to make a fresh start. Geoff Maltby (Johnny Vegas), who calls himself 'The Oracle', has an irritating computer-like knowledge of trivia, he claims to be the Lancashire pub quiz champion, and is prone to fits of competitive behavior; he has always come on holiday with his mother, Noreen (Elsie Kelly). Gavin (Hugh Sachs) and Troy (Paul Bazely) are on their first holiday together after setting up a successful hair salon. They consider themselves superior to the other guests but are happy enough to get drunk and snigger at them; later in the series their relationship hits rock bottom when Troy is caught with another series regular.
