Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705]  April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A renowned polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions. He facilitated many civic organizations, including Philadelphia's fire department and a university.

Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity, first as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies. As the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, "In a Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat." To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."

Ben Franklin (company)

Ben Franklin is a chain of five and dime and arts and crafts stores found in small towns throughout the United States, currently owned by Promotions Unlimited of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. They are organized using a franchise system, with individual stores owned by independent proprietors. It was perhaps the first retail franchise, starting in 1927. They are named after Benjamin Franklin, taking a cue in their merchandise offerings from Franklin's saying, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

History

Origins

The chain originated in Boston in 1877 as Butler Brothers, a mail-order wholesaler selling general and variety-store items. At the turn of the 20th century, Butler Brothers had over 100,000 customers in the United States. As variety stores were penetrating their market, the company founded the Ben Franklin chain in 1927, which was sold in 1959. At Ben Franklin's peak, the chain had 2,500 stores nationwide.

Walmart founder Sam Walton started in retailing operating a Ben Franklin store. In 1973, Michael J. Dupey converted a Ben Franklin store to start the Michaels chain in Texas.

Ben Franklin (Canadian politician)

Ben Franklin (1942–March 22, 2003) was mayor of the city of Nepean, Ontario from 1978 to 1997. Nepean became part of the city of Ottawa in 2001.

He was born in Elgin, Ontario in 1942. He graduated from Carleton University with a BA in 1971 and became a high school geography teacher. In 1973, he was elected to Nepean council. In 1975, he ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Carleton in the Ontario general election. As mayor, Franklin established a "pay as you go" policy which brought the city out of debt. He retired in 1997 due to health problems. His executive assistant, Mary Pitt, succeeded him as mayor of Nepean after running a campaign that promised to simply continue Franklin's vision.

He received an artificial heart in March 2003 but died of heart failure later that month at the age of 60.

Ben Franklin Place at Centrepointe was named after him. He was the first person to be given an honorary key to the new city of Ottawa.

A fool in love A crazy situation
Her velvet glove Knocks me down and down and down and down.
Her kiss of fire A loaded invitation
Inside her smile She takes me down and down and down and down.
Her moves look good A touch of desparation
From where I stood She turned my head around and round and round.
It comes kinda hard When I hear your voice on the radio
Taking me back down the road that leads back to you.
Oh-oh 29 Palms I feel the heat of your desert heart
Taking me back down the road that leads back to you.
Oh, I'm burning in love! A strange infatuation
Why cold cold touch, mmm What must I do, do, do, do
The heat and the dust Increase my desolation
In God we trust Always for you, and you, and you, and you.
It comes kinda hard When I hear your voice on the radio
Leading me back down the road that leads back to you.
Oh-oh-oh 29 Palms I feel the heat of your desert heart
Leading me back down the road that leads back to you.
Baby, now It comes kinda hard
When I hear your voice on the radio
Leading me back down the raod that leads back to you.
