Mako Iwamatsu

Mako Iwamatsu (岩松 マコ, Iwamatsu Mako, December 10, 1933 – July 21, 2006) was a Japanese-born American actor and voice artist who has been nominated for numerous awards. Many of his acting roles credited him simply as Mako where he omitted his surname. He is best known for his roles as Po-Han in The Sand Pebbles (for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), Akiro the Wizard in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, and for his voice roles as Aku in Samurai Jack and Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7095 Hollywood Blvd.

Early life

Mako was born in Kobe, Japan, the son of noted children's book authors and illustrators Taro Yashima and Mitsu Yashima. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, his parents, who were political dissidents, moved to the United States, leaving Mako in the care of his grandmother. After the war, his parents were able to arrange for him to join them, in 1949. He enlisted in the military in the 1950s and became a naturalized American citizen in 1956. When Mako first joined his parents in the USA, he studied architecture. During his military service, he discovered his theatrical talent, and trained at the Pasadena Community Playhouse.

Mako Sakurai (桜井 真子, Sakurai Mako, born (1986-10-07)October 7, 1986 in Tokyo, Japan), better known by her mononym name Mako (sometimes stylised MAKO) is a Japanese voice actress and singer. She is a member of the band Bon-Bon Blanco, in which her prominent role is as the maraca player. She has also performed in a Japanese television drama called Meido in Akihabara. She is affiliated with I'm Enterprise. Her anime voice acting debut was in Kamichu! where, in the ending theme song, her character also plays the maracas. As Hinako Hiiragi in anime Chitose Get You!! she plays maracas again, in the ending theme (episodes 1-13).

Believe (Emerson Drive album)

Believe is the sixth studio album by Canadian country music group Emerson Drive. The album was released in Canada on May 5, 2009 via Midas/Valory/Open Road. The album's first single, "Belongs to You," reached the top forty on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the United States.

Critical reception

The album received mixed reviews from music critics. It received a three-and-a-half star rating from Todd Sterling of AllMusic, who said that the album was "slickly produced" and that it "sticks to the well-worn formula of the group's previous releases," but said that it had "every color of the musical rainbow." Sterling cited "Your Last" as a standout, calling it a "lump-in-the-throat masterpiece." Jim Malec of The 9513 gave it one star out of five, referring to the song's lyrics as largely cliché in nature and saying, "There is not a single song on Believe worth hearing. It is an entirely disposable album that is unoriginal, uninteresting and unnecessary." Malec also criticized the album's sound, saying that the mixing of instruments and Brad Mates' vocals did not seem cohesive.

'Believe' was favourably reviewed by Zeth Lundy of popmatters.com who concluded "The next time you take the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack from the stereo, pining for some oomph to your Americana, reach for Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. “Colonel” J.D. Wilkes calls himself a jumpin’ jimdaddy, and before long, you will too." Ben Donnelly of dusted.com reviewed the album and commented that "Translating this band's strengths to record will probably always be a challenge. ... Still, they make the most of the challenge."

Robert Plant, of Led Zeppelin fame, named "Believe" as his favorite album of 2005.

Believe (Elton John song)

"Believe" is a 1994 song recorded by Elton John. It was the first single from his album Made in England and was released on 20 February 1995. It reached #1 in Canada. In the US, "Believe" was Elton John's fifteenth number one on the Adult Contemporary chart and also went to number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100. It gave him his third straight top twenty single in the US, with his two hit singles from Disney's The Lion King preceding it. In Europe, it was a top twenty hit in Switzerland, UK, France and Belgium (Wallonia) and achieved moderate success in several other countries. The songs which feature as B-side were recorded at the Greek Theatre, in Los Angeles.

The music video for the song was entirely in black-and-white and shot in London, featuring shots of the Believe Wall in the beginning and end of the video.
