Belhaven, North Carolina

Belhaven is a town in Beaufort County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,688 at the 2010 Census. Belhaven is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region.

Belhaven is the hometown of singer Little Eva, whose song "The Loco-Motion" was a US #1 hit in 1962. It is also the home of Super Bowl XLV champion and Oakland Raider C. J. Wilson.

History

The Belhaven City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Geography

Belhaven is located at 35°32′35″N 76°37′24″W / 35.54306°N 76.62333°W / 35.54306; -76.62333 (35.542930, -76.623278). It is on the north shore of the Pungo River. New Town dock on Water and Pamlico streets.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), of which 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) is land and 0.50 square miles (1.3 km²), or 23.88%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,968 people, 827 households, and 530 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,313.4 people per square mile (506.6/km²). There were 1,015 housing units at an average density of 677.4 per square mile (261.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 37.30% White, 60.67% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.71% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.69% of the population.
