  • Swatch Internet Time

Swatch Internet Time (or beat time) is a decimal time concept introduced in 1998 by the Swatch corporation as part of their marketing campaign for their line of "Beat" watches.

Instead of hours and minutes, the mean solar day is divided up into 1000 parts called ".beats". Each .beat is equal to one decimal minute in the French Revolutionary decimal time system and lasts 1 minute and 26.4 seconds (86.4 seconds) in standard time. Times are notated as a 3-digit number out of 1000 after midnight. So, @248 would indicate a time 248 .beats after midnight representing 248/1000 of a day, just over 5 hours and 57 minutes.

There are no time zones in Swatch Internet Time; instead, the new time scale of Biel Meantime (BMT) is used, based on Swatch's headquarters in Biel, Switzerland and equivalent to Central European Time, West Africa Time, and UTC+01. Unlike civil time in Switzerland and many other countries, Swatch Internet Time does not observe daylight saving time.

    History

Swatch Internet Time was announced on October 23, 1998, in a ceremony at the Junior Summit '98, attended by Nicolas G. Hayek, President and CEO of the Swatch Group, G.N. Hayek, President of Swatch Ltd., and Nicholas Negroponte, founder and then-director of the MIT Media Lab. During the Summit, Swatch Internet Time became the official time system for Nation1, an online country (supposedly) created and run by children.

    Beat reporting

Beat reporting, also known as specialized reporting, is a genre of journalism that can be described as the craft of in-depth reporting on a particular issue, sector, organization or institution over time.

    Description

Beat reporters build up a base of knowledge on and gain familiarity with the topic, allowing them to provide insight and commentary in addition to reporting straight facts. Generally, beat reporters will also build up a rapport with sources that they visit again and again, allowing for trust to build between the journalist and his/her source of information. This distinguishes them from other journalists who might cover similar stories from time to time.

Journalists become invested in the beats they are reporting for, and become passionate about mastering that beat. Beat reporters often deal with the same sources day after day, and must return to those sources regardless of their relationship with them. Those sources may or may not be pleased with the reporting of the reporters. It is pertinent that beat reporters contact their sources quickly, obtain all necessary information, and write on deadline.

    Bangs (hip hop artist)

Ajak Chol, better known by his stage name Bangs, Ur Boy Bangs and Ur Boi Bangs and formerly Bstar Bangs, is a South Sudanese-Australian hip hop artist. He is best known for his viral songs "Take U to Da Movies" and "Meet Me on Facebook".

    Biography

Ajak Chol was born in Juba, South Sudan in 1990. At the age of 11, he moved to Egypt with his family after his father married another wife. He spent two years there before immigrating to Australia with his family in 2003.

    Musical career

In 2005 Chol formed the Nubian Knights, a hip-hop collective (together with fellow east-African migrants Ezeldin Deng, Francis Dbuia, Abraham Adet and Tong Bol), as result of the Footscray Community Arts Centre's ID Check project. The Nubian Knights produced a self-titled album and performed as part of the St Jerome's Laneway Festival in 2009.

Chol recorded his debut album Hard 2 Be Up in mid 2008 at Gateway Living Music Studios in Footscray, Victoria, with producer John Favaro. In 2009, he posted "Take U to Da Movies" on YouTube a satire on real rap music, where it became a viral hit because of how hilarious it was after a few months. In 2010 he appeared at the Melbourne Big Day Out on the Lilyworld stage, he recorded two singles, titled "Meet Me on Facebook" and "Christmas Story". A percentage of profit from each sale of "Christmas Story" is donated to the International Rescue Committee, to aid their work in Sudan.

    Bangs (hair)

Bangs, also called a fringe outside North America, is a shaped cutting of the front part of the hair so that it lies over the forehead. Bangs are usually cut fairly straight at or above the eyebrows, but it can also be ragged or ruffled, spiked up with hair gel, mousse or wax, swept to one side or the other, or cut longer to fall over the eyes.

    Terminology

The term bangs originally referred to a hair cut bang-off (straight across at the front), although the term is now applied to diverse forms of hair stylings. It is probably related to bang-tail, a term still used for the practice of cutting horses' tails straight across. The term fringe refers to the resemblance of the short row of hair to ornamental fringe trim, such as that often found on shawls.

    Common styles

  • Straight across or full bangs: Hair combed straight down with no interference opposite to the side-swept. Can be a bit wispy or blunt depending on the cut.
  • Sideswept bangs: Hair is cut slightly longer than straight across bangs, usually a length that could cover the eyebrow until the eye area when hair is brushed/combed to fall going to one side of the face. Could be as thin as see through bangs or as thick as blunt bangs.
