Bauma

Bauma is a municipality in the district of Pfäffikon in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland.

History

Bauma is first mentioned in 1470 as Boumen. Bauma and Sternenberg merged to Bauma on 1 January 2015.

Geography

Following the 2015 merger, Bauma had a total area of 29.53 km² (11.40 sq mi). Before the merger Bauma had an area of 20.8 km² (8.0 sq mi). Of this area, 35.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 54.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8.6% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.2%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).In 1996 housing and buildings made up 6% of the total area, while transportation infrastructure made up the rest (2.7%). Of the total unproductive area, water (streams and lakes) made up 1.1% of the area. As of 2007 6.9% of the total municipal area was undergoing some type of construction.

Bauma is situated in the upper Töss Valley at the foot of the Hörnli ridge. It consists of two sections Bauma and Saland and about 80 hamlets and individual houses scattered throughout the valley and hillside. The localities within the municipality besides the villages of Bauma and Saland include the formerly independent village of Hörnen (first mentioned in 869 as Huornomarcha), Altlandenberg, Juckern, Blitterswil, Dillhaus, Undalen, Blitterswil, Bliggenswil, Wolfensberg, Wellenau, Lipperschwendi, Laubberg and Schindlet.

The bauma (International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment) is the world's largest trade fair in the construction industry. The trade fair, which can be visited by anyone, is held every three years on the grounds of the Neue Messe München and lasts for seven days.

Trade fairs

The Bauma 2013 was held from 15 to 21 April 2013, with approximately 3,420 exhibitors from 57 countries (2010: 3,150 exhibitors from 53 countries, 2007: 3,002 exhibitors from 48 countries)and attended by over 530,000 visitors (2010: approximately 415,000, 2007: 500,000). The 200,000 foreign visitors came from 200 different countries. The exhibition area was 570,000 m² (2010: 555,000 m², 2007: 540,000 m²), of which 180,000 m² was within the hall areas. Partner region was the land of Indonesia. The next fair will be held from 11 to 17 April 2016.
